The Movie Producer and the Trinity of Film Making | Movie Zones

There are three stages of film making, and everything involved falls somewhere within those periods.

The first stage is called pre-production. In this phase all the set up has to be done. The producer has decided on a script or treatment that suits his vision, and he is ready to start the preparations for the actual filming. All legalities must be settled (rights to material, etc). Investment capital must be acquired and a preliminary budget created. The nuts and bolts of the future film must be addressed: fleshing out the script, deciding on locations, building sets, and hiring the cast and the crew.

The length of the pre-production phase can have huge variations. As Eric Gozlan, CEO of Goldrush Entertainment Inc (a Montreal based Production Company) said:

?There is no real rhyme or reason to the length of time it takes to develop a film. A script can be in development for several months or for several years. It really depends on how long it takes to put all the pieces together. We were very fortunate to have Maria Bello agree to star in CarJacked right after starring in our production Beautiful Boy. But finding the right Director took a little more time. Typically pre-production is spent finalizing financing, researching locations, polishing the script, casting the actors and attaching the key creative such as the Director, Composer and Art Director.?

By the time the production reaches the execution stage, all the necessary elements must be in place. At this point the Producer becomes the supervisor and go-to person for the entire project. If any department requires something, the producer makes it appear. He or she handles complaints, problems, and staff relations. Some Producers are micromanagers, making sure that they have control over every aspect of the film making. That is their production style. Others believe that the people they have engaged are highly qualified and other than general supervision, they step back. Eric Gozlan fits into the second category:

?Every member of the crew is an integral piece of the puzzle. I have complete confidence in the people with whom I chose to work with and am a strong believer in giving people room to shine.?

Mr. Gozlan describes his manner of problem solving in this way:

?A producer has to be adept at problem-solving, while keeping everyone happy. Unexpected events and problems always arise during production. The trick is knowing how to deal with the problems. You may be able to troubleshoot over time but knowing how to deal with the various personalities you find on and off set is a whole different ball game.?

During post-production everything that has been shot must be edited, music, etc, must be added, and digital special effects incorporated into the finished product.

When the film is considered to have been completed, the Producer engages a distribution company to make the movie accessible to theatres and the public.

Long before this point, the producer has been looking for a new vision and product and the cycle starts again.
