Here comes the bride, on a jetpack.
Wedding guests saw a truly unique ceremony when the bride and groom rocketed across Newport Bay in Southern California with water-powered jetpacks.
Grant Engler, 25, and, Amanda Volf, 26, from Grand Rapids, Mich. started at opposite sides of the bay. First the groom jetted down the proverbial aisle-over the body of water-to land on the shore. Shortly after, his bride followed suit to her requested entrance song, "Pachelbel's Canon," keeping the wedding somewhat traditional.
"We're pretty adventurous," Amanda told the Daily News. "We enjoy the outdoors and do fun stuff all the time. Maybe not quite like this because this is a new activity for people to experience. But I wouldn't say people who know us were surprised."
Zozi, an adventure travel startup, hosted the wedding with jetpacks supplied by Jetlev Southwest. The jetpacks suck water through a tube and blast 500 pounds of pressure to soar through the air. Each costs about $100,000. The bride and groom arrived around 9 a.m. for a three-hour practice session before their 3 p.m. ceremony on Thursday.
"It's the closet you can be to flying. It's an indescribable, amazing feeling," Grant said.
Tian Lee, a spokesperson for Zozi, worked closely with the couple from the beginning. "I wanted to make this wedding beautiful for them," Lee told the Daily News. "We love the couple so much. Their spirit of adventure and love of life exemplifies what we want to do."
Although original, the wedding was also authentic. Former Zozi employee Alicia Ostarello, currently of Vow Muse, officiated the wedding and signed the marriage certificate. She wrote the entire ceremony after skyping with the couple.
"It wasn't a faux-wedding," Lee insisted. "It was a real wedding." Volf's father joined her by the shore, after she landed, and walked her several paces to Grant.
After being declared man and wife, the newlyweds flew back over the bay in tandem to perform a processional loop. Their jetpacks' created a heart-shaped wake, which was visible from a bird's eye-view.
The couple even danced in the air with jetpacks to their appropriately chosen wedding song "Come Fly With Me," performed by Frank Sinatra. "We have to give Zozi credit for the song. They picked it for us and it was a perfect fit. We even used it later at our reception," Grant said.
