Two flight attendants and three passengers were injured during turbulence as an American Airlines flight started its descent into Miami on Tuesday evening. They were taken to a local hospital after the flight landed shortly after 6 p.m. ET at Miami International.
A few other passengers also required medical attention in the gate area, according to American Airlines spokesperson Matt Miller.
The Boeing 757, inbound from Aruba, was 30 minutes away from landing in Miami when the 185 passengers and six crew members experienced turbulence for about 15 seconds.
The seat belt sign was illuminated, and "nothing on the radar indicated that turbulence was in the area," Miller said.
Separately, five people from a US Airways flight, including crew members, were treated at a Philadelphia hospital after the Rome-bound jet made an emergency stop because of a strange odor.
Crew members aboard Flight 720 from Charlotte, N.C., became lightheaded , airline spokesperson Bill McGlashen said.?
Twelve people on the flight felt sick from the fumes,?NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.
After alerting the?captain, the flight was diverted to?Philadelphia International where it landed?safely.?US Airways said they replaced the crew and the flight resumed in the wee hours Wednesday morning.
