PINSON, Alabama --- The city of Pinson expects to break ground next year on a park covering about 20 acres of city-owned property just west of Alabama 75, Mayor Hoyt Sanders said tonight.
The Pinson City Council heard a presentation tonight on a preliminary plan from landscape architect Jane Reed Ross of Goodwyn Mills & Cawood.
The property sits between Glen Brook Road on the north and Sweeny Hollow Road and Powell Avenue on the south. The main entrance would be from Alabama 75.
Ross said the land includes many natural characteristics ideal for a park. Among those are a creek, limestone formations, lawn areas, tree-covered areas and a slope ideal for an amphitheater.
"Sometimes you want to create those, but we have them here to work with," Ross said.
Features of the park in the preliminary plan include an amphitheater and pavilion, boardwalk along the creek, walking trails, splash pad, playground, dog park and a building for events, restrooms and concessions.
Another planned feature is a Frisbee golf course. Ross said Frisbee golf is a popular sport that would attract people from outside Pinson and could be enjoyed by Pinson residents, as well.
Sanders said building the park has been a goal of the city for years.
The architects will make adjustments to the design based on comments at tonight's presentation and make cost estimates to help the city plan its budget for the park, which could be built in phases.
"Depending on what they come with as an estimated total, we will begin to see what parts we can afford and when," Sanders said.
