(AP) ? Ford Motor Co. says its Focus small car is on track to become the best-selling car in the world this year, trumping the Toyota Corolla.

Ford sold 489,616 Focus sedans and hatchbacks worldwide in the first half of 2012. That was almost 27,000 more than the perennial best-seller, the Toyota Corolla.

Ford made the announcement at its assembly plant in Rayong, which opened in May to build the Focus. The Thailand plant, which is one of Ford's most advanced, has the capacity to produce 150,000 cars per year for sale in Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and other countries in the region.

Ford's recently revamped Focus is sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. It's a strong seller in the U.S., where Focus sales were up 31 percent in the first half of the year compared with 2011. But the Corolla is still king in the U.S., where it outsold the Focus by nearly 27,500 in the first half of the year.

The Corolla could still top the Focus worldwide, too. Last year at this time the Focus was ahead of the Corolla, but the Corolla pulled through in the end, outselling the Focus by around 100,000 vehicles, according to IHS Global Insight, an industry consulting firm.

At the plant Friday, Ford executives were also celebrating the production of the 350 millionth vehicle Ford has made since its founding 109 years ago.

Home Improvement Ideas That Will Excite And Inspire You | Urban ...

Wrap your water heater in an insulation kit to improve energy usage and efficiency. Kits are available for any size or model water heater and the savings generated from increased efficiency quickly offsets the cost of the insulating kit. Water heater installation kits are also easy to install, making this a simple do it yourself home improvement project.

A great home improvement tip that will give a great feel to your home is to place wooden panels all throughout your living room. This will give your living room an extra homey feel, and you?ll find yourself wanting to spend even more time in front of your television set.

Make sure that your contractor checks on the building code, whenever you make a major change to your house! Often, people will make sweeping changes to their house just because they feel like it or because they feel it will make their home more grand. If you make a change that causes a safety issue, you could end up in major trouble down the line.

Rather than allowing a spare bedroom to sit empty and unused, why not turn it into your own personal library? Even if you don?t feel that you enough books to warrant a library, you can also fill its shelves with DVDs, CDs and your favorite magazines or paper. Add a plush rug and a high-backed chair for an extra touch of class.

Check out a new contractor through the Better Business Bureau and your Home Owners Association to find out if he?s registered and what his rating is. If he isn?t registered with either, sever ties immediately. If he is registered, see if anyone has lodged a complaint against him and how it was resolved.

Repainting, replacing the carpet, or getting new plants and other decorations are easy ways to update your home. Rearranging furniture and installing mirrors can let the room seem bigger and more airy. Make sure the room provides the functionality that it is meant to serve while expressing your personality and tastes.

Add flowers and candles to your home. These additions are a cheap and easy way to add cheer to a home. The flowers will add color and the candles will brighten up the room and add a pleasant aroma if scented. Candles should be used with care, however, to prevent fires.

If someone in your household has long hair or you bathe shedding pets often, use a hair trap in the shower to prevent annoying clogs in the drain. There are a variety of models to fit different drain styles, but they all work by preventing hair from entering the drain and getting stuck in the trap.

Decals are a great facelift for boring furniture and appliances; getting them off is a different story. If you?re out of ideas on how to remove old decals from surfaces the following tip is sure to help. Spray the decals you wish to remove with WD-40 spray. Try to lift the edges to get the liquid underneath. Let it sit in the solution for a minute or two and then gently scrape the decal with an old credit card or a plastic knife.

To give an ordinary room a sleek and finished look, add some decorative molding. Molding is highly sought after by many buyers, and can make a room look more put together. Molding is surprisingly easy to install, and is fairly inexpensive. To really make your molding pop, paint it a color that compliments your walls.

Consider converting unused rooms in your house. Before you spend too much money adding an extra room or two to your home, seriously look at what you have to work with. Are you getting much use out of that exercise room or office? Even storage spaces like attics can be transformed into something useful, like a bedroom.

As you can see, home improvement can actually be very satisfying. Learning how to do small jobs at your house fosters your sense of independence and boosts your confidence as a property owner. The do-it-yourself movement is absolutely within your reach after careful research, and reading this article is a great first step.

Radio to the rescue ? Ham operators establish link with world after ...

By Clark Fair

Photo courtesy of the Kenai Peninsula College Photo Archive. Al Hershberger on a Ham radio during the 1960s. Hershberger and Ed Back helped establish communication with the outside world via radio following the devastation of the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake.

Redoubt Reporter

In 1964, when amateur Ham radio operator Zilla Maile wanted a new, state-of-the-art radio, she knew the man to contact: Al Hershberger, owner of Hershberger?s Radio and TV store in Soldotna.

What Maile didn?t know was the important role that synchronicity and her new radio would play during one of the most memorable events in Alaska history.

Maile owned and operated The Yarn Shop, a storefront that had been built onto her home just across the playground from Soldotna Elementary School. (Her home, which she shared with her husband, Justin, and their son, Larry, also partly consisted of Soldotna?s original post office.) In one section of the house were three small rooms ? Larry?s bedroom, a guest room and Zilla?s radio room.

Larry called his mother ?sort of a hobbyist? in the radio world. ?When we were kids, she used to spend evenings in her radio room talking to people across the country,? he said. ?She also made contacts in Europe, but usually those only worked given specific weather conditions that allowed the signal to skip.?

In Zilla?s radio room was a 2-meter Heathkit used strictly for local communication, and an older radio that could communicate only through Morse code and was used when Maile had her Novice Class license. After she moved to the Advanced Class license, she desired a more sophisticated radio ? thus the visit to Hershberger, a licensed dealer for Hallicrafters electronics.

One of the best Ham radios commercially available at that time was the Hallicrafters SR-150 Ham transceiver, a radio combining a transmitter and a receiver in a single unit. Maile put in an order with Hershberger and waited for her new radio to arrive.

Although she didn?t know it ? in the pre-digital age in which package tracking was lacking ? her new

radio was destined to arrive on March 27, 1964. In fact, it did arrive that day, but nobody ? not even Maile herself ? paid it any mind. All of the residents of Alaska had more important things to consider.

At 5:36 p.m. on March 27, Southcentral Alaska was wracked by the largest earthquake ever recorded in U.S. and North American history. The Good Friday quake devastated several coastal towns, including Seward, Whittier and Valdez, and caused (directly and indirectly through tsunamis) more than a hundred deaths in the state.

In Southcentral Alaska, the phone system crashed, and power failures knocked out the lights. And with communication in and out of the state hampered, residents of the Lower 48 (many of whom had relatives in Alaska) could not find reliable information about the natural disaster that some feared had wiped out the entire Kenai Peninsula.

In Soldotna, the city?s civil defense director, George Denison, went into action. Among his first moves was contacting Hershberger and large-appliance dealer, Ed Back, and asking them to bring their Ham radio equipment down to the Sky Bowl, the local bowling alley and coffee shop (already a popular local gathering place, and where owner, Burton Carver, had a generator). Denison wanted Hershberger and Back to set up their equipment and attempt to re-establish communication with the outside world.

lot is now, had been trying to figure out how bad and how widespread the damage was. Hauling a portable radio outdoors, he had attempted to locate Anchorage radio stations and found them all off the air. Then, on his Ham radio, he heard a mayday signal from Valdez, and he realized that the destruction had been significant.

Back, who lived just a little farther away, arrived at the Sky Bowl shortly after Hershberger. They set up Hershberger?s equipment first in a small room and strung his 120-foot-long antenna outside, affixing the end of it to the rearview mirror of a conveniently parked school bus. For that first evening, Hershberger said, they used his radio to establish communications.

Thus began a round-the-clock vigil for the two men. They sent hundreds of messages to people all over the country, assuring them that the peninsula still existed and that most of its residents were a little shaken up but otherwise doing fine.

While their public service continued, serendipity stepped in.

?As more and more people kept coming there (to the Sky Bowl),? Hershberger said, ?I spotted Chet Wilhelm, who was a driver for Tachick Freight Lines. He had just come from Seward and was on the flats the other side of Sterling when the quake hit. Had he been on the other side of Cooper Landing he would not have been able to get here.?

The Cooper Landing bridge over the Kenai River had been destroyed by the action of the earthquake, severing traffic flow until the military later erected a temporary bridge.

Hershberger asked Wilhelm if he had any freight for his electronics store, and Wilhelm said he did. ?I asked him it was from Hallicrafters. He thought it was. ?Can you get it for me?? ?I?ll try.? It was in the middle of the truck full of freight, but he did get it, and we set it up the next morning in the bowling alley.?

The new radio was Maile?s SR-150, and since it was a big improvement over his own equipment, Back used the SR-150 to make contacts throughout Alaska for several days.

Then, once area electrical power had been restored, Hershberger hauled his own equipment back to his home, where he had a larger antenna and a more powerful amplifier for his transmitter.

For their service to Alaska, Hershberger, Back and other Ham radio operators around the state were later honored with a commemorative U.S. Postal Service stamp. Altogether, tens of thousands of messages were handled by operators in the days after the quake.

Back, Hershberger and Maile ? along with other area residents, such as John Richards and Glenn and Clarice Kipp ? were members of the Moose Horn Amateur Radio Club. According to Hershberger, the club started at the Wildwood Army Station sometime in the 1950s and was known originally as the Wildwood Station Amateur Radio Club.

Since Wildwood was involved in communications, many Ham operators were stationed there. The Wildwood club was originally all military, but it was opened later to civilians. After the Army, and later the Air Force, departed Wildwood, only civilians were left in the club, and Kenai resident Clarice Kipp suggested the new name.

Annually, the club participated in field day activities, designed to promote disaster preparedness by erecting a series of mobile towers, generators and other equipment, and then spending 24 hours on the air attempting to establish as many worldwide contacts as possible during that time period.

The club, which still includes Hershberger and Back, continues to participate annually in a field day, usually setting up equipment and broadcasting from the campus of Skyview High School each summer.

Sometimes, disaster preparedness pays off.

Married life and the complexities of interior ... - Home Improvement

Married life is full of tense conversations, but one topic that has become increasingly contested over the years is interior design.

Once upon a time a wife might have had the monopoly on what the house looked like, but with the rise of feminism and the metrosexuality of the modern male, the roles have become less clearly defined. When it comes to decorating a flat or house there can often be conflict as both sides might want to take the lead.

Just like any other part of marital disagreement, the key is to compromise and make sure that both sides have the chance to let their opinions be heard. However, one caveat is that a creative vision can be stronger when it is more singularly focused, so be sensible about when you insist on having input.

Sometimes it is better to let your husband or wife take the lead on a whole room, provided that you are allowed to take the reigns in another area.

Think about what you want

It is easy to just get frustrated that your partner is just doing everything and not asking for you to contribute, but you must also have some idea what you want to add to the room, so that when they ask you how you would change things, you have more to say than just, 'I don't know'.

The breadth of options available may feel overwhelming at first, but simply cut out pictures or save webpages of things you like the look of, or just write down the names of luxury additions you like the sound of, such as custom fireplace mantels or a particular piece of artwork. That way, you have a collection of sensible ideas to discuss with your partner.

Don't be petty

No matter how strong your relationship is, sometimes you will get into arguments - an interior design discussion may be one of those times. Rather than let it become a petty spat, try to stay calm and think about what the pair of you are trying to achieve. Taking a break or reframing the argument can help to offer fresh perspective.

Make your feelings clear

More than just staying calm, you need to communicate what it is that you want. This might sound easy, but if you do not know the right lingo then it can be tricky to describe what you mean. If you are stumbling over descriptions, then think about drawing sketches or cutting and pasting pictures from magazines. Anything to push your message across and help you achieve the home you want.

France offers to pick up tab for young hires

France?s President Francois Hollande, waves to the media during a joint statement with Greece's Prime Minister Antonis Samaras at the Elysee Palace, Paris, Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012. (AP Photo/Michel Euler)

(AP) ? The French government wants companies to hire young people so much that it's offering to pick up the tab.

The new Socialist president, Francois Hollande, told his Cabinet Wednesday that he wants to wage a war on unemployment and unveiled a plan for the government to pay most of the salaries of tens of thousands of young people hired next year.

Unemployment in France is 10 percent, but nearly 23 percent for those under the age of 25. That's an imbalance that many European countries are struggling with: In Spain, youth unemployment is over 52 percent; it's 34 percent in Italy.

European employers are especially reluctant to hire young people because restrictive labor laws make it hard for companies to lay off employees. What's more, in France, young people are typically required to do a series of often unpaid internships before landing a full-time job or can only manage to get short-term contracts for years on end.

But few countries are approaching the problem in the way that France is. Italy and Spain have proposed modest tax breaks for companies that hire people just entering the workforce but have focused more on fundamental reforms of the labor market that they hope will address the root causes.

Under France's new plan, companies that hire a person between 16 and 25 for at least a year will only have to pay as little as 25 percent of the salary. The government hopes to create 100,000 of these "contracts for the future" next year and another 50,000 in 2014. It has promised to continue paying its share of the employee's salary for three years.

The government will give preference to young people hired from poor urban or rural areas that have been hit hardest by rising unemployment. Certain sectors will also be favored, such as medicine and digital or green technology.

"We are waging a battle for jobs," Hollande told Cabinet ministers, according to government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem. "It's the No. 1 challenge of our mandate."

Some economists were skeptical of the approach.

"Making the structures of the economy more competitive and better performing is what really has to drive the thinking (in countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece)," said Nicolas Veron, an economist affiliated with the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel and the Peterson Institute in Washington. "It's not about targeted programs; it's about the structure of the (labor) market."

Whereas countries like Spain and Italy have recently passed wide-ranging labor market reforms to regain waning investor confidence in their economies, France has so far been able to put off those kinds of tough decisions. Investor confidence in France has remained relatively strong in part because of the sheer size of the economy ? it is the eurozone's second-largest ? and also the fact that its neighbors are worse off. But experts warn France will eventually also have to face the need to reform its economy.

The proposal needs to make its way through Parliament, but Hollande's Socialist Party has a solid majority there and the issue was a major campaign promise.

Hollande has staked his credibility on driving down unemployment and encouraging growth, all while meeting strict budget deficit targets. It's unclear whether he can manage all three ? especially since the economy's fate is largely tied up with Europe's wider debt crisis and the well-being of its neighbors.

An entrepreneur's association immediately panned the idea.

"The jobs for the future are only a Band-Aid, if a necessary Band-Aid, in the face of a government that every day shows itself more incapable of overcoming the difficulties our country is confronted with," said Guillaume Cairou, president of the Club of Entrepreneurs and CEO of strategy consultancy DIDAXIS. "How can they not see that this cost is extremely high for the government, even while we should be reducing our deficit?"

The government estimates that the program will cost ?2.3 billion ($2.9 billion) next year; it did not detail costs for the following years.

Bright Arctic clouds formed by exhaust from final space shuttle launch

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Naval Research Laboratory scientist Dr. Michael Stevens is leading an international consortium of scientists in tracking the rapid transport of the exhaust plume from the final launch of the space shuttle in July 2011. The team has found that the plume moved quickly to the Arctic, forming unusually bright polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs) there a day after launch.

Understanding the rapid transport of high altitude exhaust plumes near 105 km is providing new insight into the effects of winds at the bottom edge of the space weather regime towards improved forecasts of the co-located E-region of the ionosphere. This knowledge is critical for improving models of communication signal propagation and over-the-horizon-radar, explains Dr. Stevens, a Research Physicist in NRL's Space Science Division. Current theories suggest that the plumes are rapidly transported because of narrow, high-speed wind shears. These wind shears are also linked to the occurrence of so-called Sporadic E events, thus establishing a possible link between plume transport and the lower ionosphere.

During every launch, the space shuttle injects about 350 tons of water vapor from its three main engines off the east coast of the United States between 100 and 115 km altitude. Many studies have now shown that the poleward transport of this water vapor is much faster than global-scale models predict, and a few have furthermore shown that bursts of PMCs near 83 km altitude can result. These observations are forcing researchers to reexamine their understanding of global wind patterns in the lower thermosphere.

The long-term PMC record is also likely to be modified by increased space traffic, which is important because PMCs have been implicated as indicators of upper atmospheric climate change, explains Dr. Stevens. By assembling a suite of satellite and ground-based observations following the space shuttle's final launch, the NRL-led research team has revealed the nature of these shuttle clouds for the first time. The observations from both European and American collaborators show not only the rapid poleward transport of the plume and ensuing PMC formation, but that shuttle clouds are brighter than over 99% of all other PMCs and that the ice particles are larger at higher altitudes, which is the opposite of conventional models.

By allowing researchers to distinguish the shuttle PMCs from more typical clouds, these results will ultimately enable a search of the historical record to separate the anthropogenic PMCs from the natural PMCs.

Midlife Fitness Cuts Chronic Disease Later

Click here to listen to this podcast

Being physically active has numerous benefits. Now a study has looked closely at the effects of fitness in the midlife years for preventing debilitating chronic diseases later.

The ongoing study gathered fitness stats for more than 18,000 adults, and followed their health status into old age. Assessing 40 years of that data, the analysis finds that those who had higher fitness levels in their 30s, 40s and 50s were substantially less likely to have a chronic condition between the ages of 70 and 85. The findings are in the Archives of Internal Medicine. [Benjamin Willis et al, Midlife Fitness and the Development of Chronic Conditions in Later Life]

Physical fitness seemed to stave off heart disease and heart failure, which might not be a big surprise. But it also reduced rates of diabetes, kidney disease and even Alzheimer's disease.

Current recommendations suggest adults make time for at least 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day, such as fast walking, jogging, biking or swimming. Busy middle-aged people might find it especially hard to make time for such exercise. But a small investment looks like it could pay big health dividends for decades to come.

Obama Finalizes Landmark Fuel Efficiency Standards

As Republicans gather in Tampa, despite an imminent hurricane, to officially nominate a presidential candidate who remains mute on climate change and its potential to flood convention centers in low-lying areas, President Obama has finalized landmark new fuel-efficiency standards that will cut tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2025.

The new standard will require cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs to achieve 54.5 miles per gallon, or approximately double the average mileage of cars on the road today, over the next 13 years.

This is the third time Obama has raised fuel economy standards, building upon the 2009 goal of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. The action cements the administration's commitment to reducing America's dependency on oil as part of Obama's national energy policy.

RELATED: Will Obama and Romney Talk About Climate Change During the Presidential Debate?

Romney's campaign was quick to respond to the announcement, highlighting the sharp contrast between the two candidates when it comes to their respective plans for powering the nation.

"Governor Romney opposes the extreme standards that President Obama has imposed, which will limit the choices available to American families. The President tells voters that his regulations will save them thousands of dollars at the pump, but always forgets to mention that the savings will be wiped out by having to pay thousands of dollars more upfront for unproven technology that they may not even want,? said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul in a statement.

While the Administration doesn't deny that the new standards will increase the cost of a new car, perhaps by as much as $2,000, the White House argues that the $8,000 a new car owner is forecast to save over the life of the car should more than compensate for a higher price sticker at the car dealership.

?These fuel standards represent the single most important step we?ve ever taken to reduce our dependence on foreign oil,? President Obama said in a statement Tuesday. ?It?ll strengthen our nation's energy security, it?s good for middle class families and it will help create an economy built to last.?

The nation's biggest and most influential green groups have been outspoken in their support of Obama's efforts.

Margie Alt, Executive Director of Environment America, said that "Decades from now, the clean car standards finalized today by the Obama Administration will be highlighted as a monumental turning point in America?s quest to get off oil and tackle global warming."

Sierra Club Executive Director, Michael Brune, said "Today, President Obama has taken the most significant action by any President in history to move our country off oil and slash dangerous, climate disrupting pollution that threatens our children?s future."

French court opens murder inquiry into Arafat's death

Odd Andersen / AFP - Getty Images file

Ailing Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat says goodbye to well-wishers as he boards a Jordanian army helicopter at dawn at the Muqatta, his West Bank offices in Ramallah, Oct. 29, 2004.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Following allegations by his widow that the late Palestinian leader might have been poisoned, a French court has opened an inquiry into the 2004 death of Yasser Arafat, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Arafat died at age 75 in a Paris military hospital in November 2004, a month after being flown, seriously ill, from his battered headquarters in Ramallah, where he had been effectively confined by Israel for more than 2-1/2 years.

According to the BBC, medical records stated Arafat had a massive stroke resulting from a blood disorder caused by an unknown infection. Many Palestinians, however, still believe the leader was poisoned by Israel, the BBC said, adding that some also believe the late leader had AIDS.

Saeb Erekat, chief negotiator for the Palestinian Authority, welcomed the inquiry. However, he said the Arab League would also call at the United Nations for an international investigation into the death of Arafat, who led Palestinians' campaign to create a state through years of war and peace.

Israeli court throws out family's lawsuit over death of US activist Rachel Corrie

Allegations of foul play have long surrounded Arafat's demise after French doctors who treated him in his final days said they could not establish the cause of death.

Many Arabs suspect Israel of being behind his decline, and the case returned to the headlines last month when a Swiss institute said it had discovered high levels of the radioactive element polonium-210 on Arafat's clothing supplied by his widow, Suha.

That substance was found to have killed former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.

Suha asked a court in the Paris suburb of Nanterre to open a murder investigation following the revelations publicized in a July documentary broadcast by the Qatar-based Al Jazeera satellite TV channel.

For Palestinian farmer, a constant reminder of Israeli occupation

However, the Institut de Radiophysique in Lausanne said that symptoms described in Arafat's medical reports were not consistent with polonium-210 and conclusions could not be drawn as to whether he had been poisoned.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said he hoped the French inquiry would reveal more on the circumstances of Arafat's death.

"This does not pertain to us. The complaint lodged by Suha Arafat with the French police does not address Israel or anyone in particular," he said.

"If the French justice system has decided to open an investigation, we hope that it will shed light on this matter."

'False Zionist alleged tragedy': Hamas slams Palestinian official for visiting Holocaust site

Erekat said a Palestinian committee investigating the death would continue its work. "We welcome the (French) decision," he said.

"We believe our political and medical team is working in parallel (with the French inquiry). At the same time the Arab League has now formed a committee which will call for an international investigation through the U.N. Security Council."

According to the BBC, Erekat said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had officially requested President Francois Hollande's assistance in this inquiry.

"We hope there will be a serious investigation to reveal the whole truth, in addition to an international investigation to identify all the parties involved in Arafat's martyrdom," Erekat said, according to the BBC.

'Premeditated murder'
A lawyer for Suha Arafat told Europe 1 radio that the French court was correct in recognizing its jurisdiction to investigate the case, since Arafat died in France.

"The tests done in Switzerland showed that Mr. Arafat, in all likelihood, died through poisoning," said the lawyer, Marc Bonnant. "This hypothesis must be proved, and if that's the case, then it's premeditated murder."

Suha Arafat has said her suspicions were raised when the hospital where her husband was treated acknowledged that it had destroyed his blood and urine samples.

The Palestinian Authority plans to exhume Arafat's body from a limestone mausoleum in Ramallah for an autopsy, and Tunisia has called for a ministerial meeting of the Arab League to discuss his death.

Arafat became the first president of the Palestinian Authority in 1996.

Samsung's 'Internal Memo' On The Patent Lawsuit - Business Insider

samsung galaxy s iii front pageSamsung has posted an "internal memo" on the outcome of its big patent lawsuit on the company's blog.

We're not sure how internal the memo really is, since it was posted on its blog, but whatever.

Here's what Samsung is telling its people:

We initially proposed to negotiate with Apple instead of going to court, as they had been one of our most important customers. However, Apple pressed on with a lawsuit, and we have had little choice but to counter-sue, so that we can protect our company.

Certainly, we are very disappointed by the verdict at the US District Court for the Northern District of California (NDCA), and it is regrettable that the verdict has caused concern amongst our employees, as well as our loyal customers.

However, the judge?s final ruling remains, along with a number of other procedures. We will continue to do our utmost until our arguments have been accepted.

The NDCA verdict starkly contrasts decisions made by courts in a number of other countries, such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Korea, which have previously ruled that we did not copy Apple?s designs. These courts also recognized our arguments concerning our standards patents.

History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved continuous growth, when its primary means to competition has been the outright abuse of patent law, not the pursuit of innovation.

We trust that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritize innovation over litigation, and we will prove this beyond doubt.

(AP) ? Sand dunes and a rock barrier built to help contain the 2010 Gulf oil spill are being watched for their effectiveness in shielding this fragile coastline from Isaac.

Authorities are hoping such barriers originally constructed after the enormous oil spill disaster can serve new duty in the name of broader coastal restoration.

On Dauphin Island, Alabama's largest barrier island in the Gulf, officials used money from the oil giant BP PLC to build miles of such dunes and a rock wall. Elsewhere, Louisiana officials, who have fought for decades against the erosion of coastal and wetland areas, have spent more than $200 million on sand berms off their state's coast.

Hurricane Katrina opened a 1.5-mile-wide gap on an undeveloped section of Dauphin Island in 2005, allowing the Gulf waters to wash into the eastern end of the Mississippi Sound.

Alabama took $16 million from BP to build a rock wall closing the gap. The town of Dauphin Island, meanwhile, used $2.5 million to build a set of parallel-running artificial dunes on its narrow western spit dotted with beach houses.

Both the rock wall and the artificial dunes were justified in 2010 as ways to keep oil from crossing into the ecologically sensitive sound. The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig that year killed 11 people and caused about 200 million gallons of oil to spew from BP's well in the Gulf ? prompting a huge recovery and cleanup effort all along the coast. BP has poured millions into the restoration.

"What we did, it was really targeted at the oil spill itself," Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier said.

The dunes have slowed the erosion and northward migration of Dauphin Island. Closing the cut in the island also reduced the salinity in the Mississippi Sound, giving Alabama a chance to rebuild its small and struggling oyster industry.

The town of 1,200 has struggled for years with a disappearing beach, and preserving the eroding shoreline is a leading concern.

For Dauphin Island, tourism is a lifeblood of the economy, revolving around the rental homes on the fragile west end. Thus, hurricanes and tropical storms are watched anxiously whenever they approach.

The dune line built closest to the water here has since largely washed away, said Scott Douglass, a coastal engineering professor at the University of South Alabama who consulted on the sand structures. He said it served its purpose, though, keeping oil at the surf line after the spill.

The second set of dunes parallels Bienville Boulevard, the town's main thoroughfare, for more than three miles, said Public Works Superintendent Corey Moore.

Openings are cut for driveways, and at one time town officials intended to plug them before a big storm. Collier, though, said officials shelved that plan, in part because they were worried about cutting off access for property owners and evacuating vacationers.

Still, Douglass and Collier said the 10-foot-high dunes should help prevent any storm surge from Isaac from washing over the island ? as long as the water doesn't rise too high. As of Tuesday morning, the storm surge in Alabama was forecast to reach 4 to 8 feet.

"There's no doubt that they will help," Douglass said. "The question is whether it will get overwhelmed by the magnitude of the storm."

Power, water and sewer lines could be protected by the dune, speeding recovery, officials have noted.

Much of the sand, though, was dug out of lots on the north side of the island near houses, leaving pits. The rock wall, with 260,000 tons of stone, is so strong that storm waves probing for a weak spot could yet push through the narrow stretch into the Mississippi Sound, cutting part off part of the populated area.

"If we get a direct hit of a major hurricane, the island could break in two at those holes," Douglass said. But he said he expected a storm would have to be stronger than Isaac to break through.

In Louisiana, BP spent $260 million to build emergency sand berms on the east and west sides of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The oil company has now agreed to spend another $100 million rebuild two coastal islands in the Chandeleur chain, southeast of New Orleans.

The berms were once derided as a waste of money, with a national commission concluding they were not an "effective spill response measure." Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has defended them as "one of the most effective protection measures" against the oil.

Ray Melick, a BP PLC spokesman, said the company made no value judgments on the Alabama and Louisiana projects.

"We feel like the local governments knew what they needed best at the time," Melick said.

Studies suggest such barriers hold out promise in thwarting erosion.

For example, one study has found that sand from berms built in the Chandeleurs has incorporated itself into the islands, said John Lopez, executive director of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation.

"It probably does add a little bit of life to the island," he said.

The islands provide critical habitat for birds and protect lagoons on the coast side that are important fish nurseries, Lopez said.

But no one's quite sure how the barriers will hold up to Isaac. And experts are also unsure how much new tar and oil from the Gulf spill will be stirred up by Isaac.

"I think that's one of the great mysteries," said William "Monty" Graham, an oceanography professor at the University of Southern Mississippi. "What's still out there and what's buried and what will happen?"

Graham said he expected more tar balls on beaches, but wasn't sure much else will wash up.

How to Choose a Floor Plan that Suits Your Family | Sunset Homes

Today?s custom home builders are faced with a multitude of choices ?ranging from the ideal layout, upgrades or elevation. The most critical decision that affects your everyday enjoyment of the home is often the layout itself.

It?s always important to recognize which floor plan suits your family needs ? both now and in the long-term. Below are a few criteria to consider when selecting your ideal layout for your Calgary infill home:

Open Concept or Not? Open concept floor plans are a great choice if you tend to host large get-togethers and enjoy entertaining guests. ?This layout helps make even modest homes appear larger. It also allows for more family bonding opportunities- with shared spaces for all.

For parents with young children- a kitchen open to living areas can be quite handy for keeping an eye on the kids while preparing meals. It also provides some flexibility in choosing how to utilize areas for family, dining or living.

On the other hand, if your living arrangement consists of multiple families (i.e. in-laws, etc.) or if you value a quiet environment, an open concept floor plan may not be suitable for your needs.

More privacy and less noise is a benefit of a more compartmentalized floor plan. To offer further privacy, choosing a formal living room adjacent to the front door might be preferable over a wide foyer with an open living/dining arrangement. It offers you the ability to immediately seat and welcome your guests without having to lead them through your entire home. Another honest question to ask yourself is how neat and tidy can my family keep the home? If it?s a constant struggle to keep it up, an open concept layout may not be ideal.

Bedroom Layout: The size of your family and the age of its members will largely dictate your bedroom layout needs. If your children are young then you would benefit from having your bedroom close to the for peace of mind, security and easy access for the kids during the inevitable ?bad dreams?. However, if your children are teenagers or young adults then having the bedrooms separated from each other offers more privacy for everyone involved. If there is a family member in the home who requires more accessible features, then it?s convenient to have a bedroom with a full ensuite bathroom on the main floor ? enabling their mobility and removing stairs from their daily routine.

Single Story vs Multistory: This preference largely depends on the view and privacy you seek. A single story custom infill home provides convenience and easy mobility for those concerned. It also allows for a quiet environment with no overhead noise. A multistory plan however provides nicer views of the outdoors and offers more privacy and individual space for family members.

Outdoor vs Indoor Living Space: The breakdown of a lot can largely be thought of as indoor vs. outdoor space. A family should take into account how much community green space is already within walking distance. With Canada?s varying climates you want to make sure you strike the right balance between indoor and outdoor to avoid unnecessary maintenance. If your family prefers indoor entertainment then you may be surprised as to how much outdoor space your family actually requires- so choose accordingly!

Carefully consider your family?s preferences and lifestyle prior to selecting a floorplan. Luckily Sunset Homes takes pride in offering its customers a variety of floorplans in order to meet their individual needs. If you have further input on what you?d like to see in our floorplans we?d be happy to hear from you!

Have Your Gums Checked, Seek Advice From A Periodontist Seattle ...

It?s significant to speak with a periodontist Seattle as well as cure periodontal disorders as early as possible. Ongoing research suggests that gum problems may be linked to heart ailment, brittle bones, osteopenia, high anxiety, or being diabetic. The bacterias connected with gum problems can go into the blood vessels as well as present a danger to the rest of the body. Good gums may lead to a much healthier body. Facts suggests having a history of gum condition makes you six times more prone to have future periodontal issues. Gum disorder is usually silent, meaning symptoms may not appear until an advanced phase of the disease.

Around 50 percent of grown ups in America have some sort of periodontal condition, and gingivitis is among the most common. It would be more recommended to find ways in stopping gingivitis from even existing. This could be simply achieved by making sure that you practice hygienic dental actions. As soon as you assure yourself that you clean your teeth regularly, or you use dental floss every now and then, as well as staying away from food products which are too spicy or salty, then you would not experience this cumbersome dental problem. In case your gums are reddish or inflammed, or if they bleed very easily when you clean and floss your teeth, you might have gum disease. If you?ve got gingivitis, your bleeding and inflammed gums are due to a buildup of bacteria around your gums as well as between your teeth.

Gingivitis is rarely painful when it first develops, hence it is important to examine your teeth and gums daily while flossing in order to look for premature signs of problems. Take a look at your gum color. Gums in the early stages of gingivitis might look dull and reddish instead of bright and pink. Check your toothbrush. If you notice pink on the bristles, your gums may be bleeding from the slight pressure of tooth brushing, which might indicate the initial stages of an infection. Take a look at your gum consistency. Gums in the initial stages of gingivitis might appear soft as well as inflammed. Healthy gums must be rather firm and they must not be pulling away from the teeth.

Do not forget to go to your dentist office for expert examination on the condition of your mouth even though you decide to go the natural way to minister to your gum issues. They still know what?s best when it comes to dental care. Do not ignore symptoms of gingivitis so as not to be facing a bigger problem of periodontitis. Being proactive in taking proper care of your teeth and gums is going to prove to go a long way in preventing periodontal problems.

If you don?t visit a periodontist Seattle and get treatment for gingivitis, your gums might start to pull away from your teeth, leaving small pockets. These openings trap plaque that you are unable to reach with a toothbrush. As time passes, the plaque will harden to become tartar. Plaque and tartar build-up can cause further irritation, that may gradually spread to the bone structures around your teeth. As time goes on, the pockets could get much deeper and much more difficult to clean, and your gum as well as bone might shrink. This is known as periodontitis.

Speak with a periodontist Seattle for a diagnosis of your gum concerns. Your gum and bone tissue must fit snugly around your teeth like a turtleneck. If you have gum disorder, this supporting tissue as well as bone will be destroyed, creating ?pockets? around the teeth. As time passes, these openings will become much deeper, providing a larger space for bacteria to thrive and create destruction. As bacterias build up and advance under the gum tissue in these deep pockets, further bone as well as tissue damage follow. Ultimately, when an excessive amount of bone will be lost, the teeth would need to be removed.

Each individual may feel signs and symptoms differently. Signs and symptoms may include reddish, swollen, tender gums, bleeding while brushing and/or flossing, shrinking gums, a change in bite as well as jaw alignment, loose or separating teeth.
