86% Your Sister's Sister

All Critics (106) | Top Critics (29) | Fresh (91) | Rotten (15)

It certainly shows that fine films don't need big budgets, capturing some sweet lightning in an arresting bottle indeed.

Romantic, funny, surprising and thoroughly involving, Your Sister's Sister is the rare film you give yourself over to completely.

There's a nice, loose-limbed improvisatory feeling to "Your Sister's Sister," a quality that identifies it as the work of artisans, not assembly-line professionals.

"Your Sister's Sister" follows the indie-cinema blueprint to the letter with one exception: One of the film's characters is a lesbian.

By the end of this graceful little emotional farce, you know these people, their hopes and their panic, and you wish them the very best.

Shelton and her cast are so skillful that before long it seems we are not moviegoers watching a screen but flies on a wall witnessing real encounters and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

One of the pleasanter surprises I've had this year.

Your Sister's Sister is a very sweet, very human feature that is also very, very funny. Much hay is made out of Mark Duplass' reaction shots, and that's just fine by me.

Behavior -- a mixture of scripted action and improvisation -- springs from a natural place, and while that can be uncomfortable as well as funny, it never rings false.

Such are the pleasures of improv when the players are as sharp and canny as they are here.

Lynn Shelton's fourth feature after her well-received "Humpday" demands more patience than understanding.

It's an oddly charming and entertaining film that works because it's willing to embrace the less savory side of its characters.

Although she would probably have liked a little more plot and polish, Nora Ephron would, I think, have approved.

Like a cool breeze, there is a light and fluffy feel to Your Sister's Sister that makes it the perfect palate cleanser in the middle of a hot, sweaty summer of explosions and superheroes.

There is so much good in the first hour that you can just about forgive its poorly written third act.

Involving and unexpected indie stands out from the crowd

There's a special satisfaction in hearing characters speak as if they just had arrived on the screen from the coffee shop adjacent to the movie theater.

This twisted tale has hidden agendas, pillow talk, latent romantic feelings, verbal fireworks and an ambiguous ending. As an avid bicyclist, the movie earns points from me in having Jack always wearing a helmet while riding. It loses its goodwill when...

Duplass is wonderful but even he can't shine as brightly as Emily Blunt.

This is exactly the kind of drama you thought that Hollywood couldn't make any more. The type of little lamb that would often be sacrificed in order to give us another bloated action mash-up like Transformers or Clash of the Titans.

Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt team up for good indie fun.

The film's conceits may be a bit too contrived and conventional, but nothing about these characters' interactions are forced. Your Sister's Sister is a welcome guest.

Good performances and a handy screenplay help things along, but these people find themselves more fascinating than I did.

Blunt and Duplass show enough star quality to ensure they will have plenty of work for many years to come.

Reports new study in Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Washington D.C., July 31, 2012 A study published in the July 2012 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found that diverted medical marijuana use among adolescents receiving treatment for substance abuse is very common.

Study participants from two adolescent substance abuse treatment programs in the Denver metropolitan area were asked questions about their medical marijuana use.121 of 164 adolescents (73.8%) reported using medical marijuana that had been recommended for someone else, also known as diverted medical marijuana, a median of 50 times. In the study, adolescents who used medical marijuana began using marijuana regularly at a younger age, and showed more marijuana abuse/dependence and conduct disorder symptoms than adolescents who did not use medical marijuana. Additionally, most of the adolescents rated smoking marijuana overall as having slight or no risk.

Recent state and federal policy changes have allowed for more widespread legalized medical marijuana use in Colorado. At the time of the study only 41 adolescents in the state held valid registry identification cards for medical marijuana, which suggests that adolescents using medical marijuana are more likely to have obtained it from adult registered users than from peers. The study also calls into question the adequacy of the safeguards meant to prevent medical marijuana use by individuals to whom it was not recommended, adolescents in particular. As the study authors note, in Colorado, medical marijuana is not handled like other medications that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): once approved for medical marijuana usage, individuals can purchase different amounts or even grow a personal supply.

Lead author Dr. Salomonsen-Sautel said of the study, "Many high-risk adolescent patients in substance abuse treatment have used diverted medical marijuana on multiple occasions, which implies that substantial diversion is occurring from registered users. Our results support the need for policy changes that protect against diversion of medical marijuana to adolescents."

In a related editorial, Dr. Alessandra Kazura raises questions about the safety and efficacy of marijuana as a medical treatment and discusses the perceptions adolescents may have about marijuana and its potential risks.

Fake Infinity Blade II Android port weasels into Google Play

Fake Infinity Blade II Android port weasels into Google Play

Some wily con artist thought it would be a good idea to snag the branding and assets of Infinity Blade II and post it as their own on Google Play. Except instead of actually including the game in the download, they try to get hopeful players to collect a bunch of points through ad clicks on the TapJoy network before delivering an asset pack that amounts to about 1 GB of nothing. The Google Play listing is convincing enough to the casual observer: description verbiage pulled right from the iOS App Store, "2011 Chair Entertainment Group LLC" as the developer name, the familiar icon, and even a few fake positive reviews to round things out.

The fact that TapJoy partners with such shady outfits is one thing, but scams like this should never get into Google Play. Not only does it cause a ton of disappointment in Android users, but do you think Chair and EA are remotely interested in making an official port after stuff like this? Smaller apps getting duped in schemes like this is unfortunate, but expected; how can a big developer and recognizable title like Infinity Blade II make it this far? Does Google Play need to be better curated?

Android?s share of U.S. smartphone market declined in Q2 as iPhone share ballooned 43%

Google?s (GOOG) Android is still the leading smartphone platform in the United States by a huge margin, but that margin narrowed a bit in the second quarter according to a new report. Market research firm Strategy Analytics on Monday issued its smartphone shipment estimates for the second-quarter of 2012, and it doesn?t paint a pretty picture for the market as a whole.

According to the firm?s data, U.S. smartphone shipments fell 5% annually to 24 million units in the second quarter, with Android smartphones responsible for the bulk of the decline. Among the likely cases for the decline, Strategy Analytics lists ?a volatile economy, maturing penetration of smartphones among contract mobile subscribers, and major operators tightening their upgrade policies to enhance profits.?

Sales of Android smartphones into U.S. distribution channels fell to 13.4 million units in the second quarter this year from 15.3 million units in the same quarter last year. Android?s share of the U.S. market slid to 56% from 61% as a result.

During the same period, Apple?s (AAPL) share of the U.S. smartphone channels sales shot up to 33% from 23% a year earlier, an annual growth rate of 43%. Apple shipped an estimated 7.9 million iPhones?in the U.S. during the second quarter this year compared to 5.9 million units in the second quarter of 2011 according to Strategy Analytics.

?We estimate Android shipped 13.4 million smartphones for 56 percent share of the United States market in the second quarter of 2012,? said Strategy Analytics?analyst Neil Mawtson. ?This was down from 15.3 million units shipped and 61 percent share a year earlier. Android remains the number one platform by volume in the United States, but its market share is approaching a peak and Apple iOS has been gaining ground. Apple?s US market share has risen by ten points from 23 percent in Q2 2011 to 33 percent in Q2 2012. Apple is rumored to be launching a new iPhone in the coming weeks, and that event, if it takes place, is going to heap even more pressure on Android in its home market.?

Finally, the firm notes that shipments of BlackBerry smartphones sank to 1.6 million units last quarter compared to 2.7 million in the June quarter last year.

Scenes from an Underground Fight Show in New York City

Earlier today there was an edition of the Underground Combat League (UCL), New York City's long-running, unsanctioned MMA promotion.? Unlike most of the other states in the country, New York has deemed professional MMA to be illegal.? But a loophole in the law has allowed amateur events to flourish ? albeit in a quasi-hush-hush world where fighters sometimes use aliases and the locations of shows are kept secret from the athletic commission.?

Please, don't judge them too harshly.? The UCL, for instance, has churned out over forty events since its debut in 2003, and can count among its alumni such fighters as former UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and International Fight League heavyweight Bryan Vetell (as well as a slew of dudes who went on to fight in Strikeforce, the WEC, Bellator and top regional promotions).? And before you accuse anyone of exploitation, remember this: everyone from promoter Peter Storm to the fighters to the fans wants to see New York State sanction the sport; it's only because New York won't that events like this exist.

You're probably about to ask something along the lines of "Well, don't you think underground shows like this one are setting the sport back and keeping it from being sanctioned?"? That's a clown-question, bro.? The politicians who favor MMA in New York have cited the state's thriving underground fight scene as a reason why the sport must be sanctioned.

Jim Genia always posts live results from these dastardly events here.

Rivals take advantage as China, Japan wobble in gymnastics

The United States, Russia and hosts Great Britain exploited sloppiness from Japan and defending Olympic champions China to set the pace in men's artistic gymnastics qualifying on Saturday.

Dominant in Beijing four years ago, China were completely out of sorts and finished the day with the sixth-highest qualifying score, while Japanese superstar Kohei Uchimura fell twice as his team wound up in fifth place.

The USA were the chief beneficiaries, registering a total score of 275.342 points that put them above Russia (272.595), with Britain (272.420) third.

It is the first time a British team have reached the men's gymnastic final since 1924.

The scores will be wiped clean when the teams cross swords again in Monday's all-around team final at London's North Greenwich Arena, when France and Ukraine will complete the line-up.

Guo Weiyang symbolised China's toils. A late replacement for the injured Teng Haibin, he fell off the pommel horse and produced a clumsy floor display, culminating in a face-first fall that contributed to a dismal score of 12.266.

"One of the gymnasts is a substitute, and he made quite a few mistakes due to a lack of experience," said Chen Yibing of team-mate Guo's display.

"We think that we should beat Britain, but because of the substitute and various other things, we didn't perform as we should have."

Three-time world champion Uchimura has been tipped to sweep all before him in London, but he came off the high bar and earned a score of just 12.466 on the pommel horse following a fall and an incomplete dismount.

He was awarded a mark of 15.766 on the floor, a 16.033 on the vault, and a 15.533 on the parallel bars, but finished the day in ninth place and will only compete in the floor and individual all-around finals.

"There were a couple of mistakes that happened at different stages, notably on the high bar, and that created a bit of uncertainty," said Uchimura of his team's performance.

On his own errors, he said: "I'll try not to make any more mistakes. We'll practice tomorrow (Sunday), so I'll try to improve."

Britain were solid throughout, and saw Kristian Thomas and Daniel Purvis make the early running in the individual scores.

Olympic bronze medallist Louis Smith delivered an impressive 15.800 routine on the pommel horse, prompting huge cheers from the home crowd that brought tears to the British star's eyes.

"I knew that if I got through my routine I'd break down, because it's been such an emotional four years," he said.

On the reaction of the supporters, he said: "It was magical, it really was. When they announced us and the crowd erupted, it blew your socks off."

American fans replaced their British counterparts in the afternoon session and they, too, had plenty to cheer about.

Jonathan Horton made up for falls on the pommel horse and the parallel bars with a fine 15.566 routine on the high bar, while 20-year-old Danell Leyva claimed first place in the individual all-around standings.

"I didn't see China's score, but I was aware that Japan was having a rough day," said US team captain Horton.

"I watch routines all the time and I see Kohei struggling and some other guys struggling, but I wasn't really focusing on that at all.

"We did a good job and managed to stay within our own little team container."

Germany impressed in the third and final qualifying session, but two-time world silver-medallist Philipp Boy hurt his ankle on the vault and fell on the high bar, denying him a place in the final of the individual all-around event.

Bulgaria's Jordan Jovtchev established an Olympic gymnastics record by appearing in his sixth Games at the age of 39, and he squeezed into the rings final in eighth place.

Coastal Industrial Contracting Co Inc | Urban Boater

Volvo Excavators are typically made use of within the construction industry to dig out or excavate sand piles, cement and rubble. Therefore, good grading and excavation opens up the construction site for the commencing of the building process. If the work is done right on the first attempt, the building process will be right on schedule and deadlines are easily met. Poor grading and excavation need to be redone and this wastes construction time and resources too.

Search for your Contractors license number at the website: www.cslb.ca.gov. Jot down your license number, your license classification, and the year when you were licensed.

Before concluding we would like to state that for long lasting quality works, hiring the right contractor is vital. But in this competitive environment, picking the right professional is not as simple as stated.

Industrial Contractor

What can be really cool is wowing an acquaintance with a title that they haven never heard before. For instance, an Industrial Contractor could provoke much more interest by calling himself a ?commercial wiring specialist? than he could by using the traditional title, ?electrician.? It is only natural that people pause upon hearing such unique descriptions and then continue to ask, ?Just what is it that you do?? With environmental awareness of the rise and a shift in focus onto our effects on the planet, it is no wonder that residential, industrial and commercial construction projects now have ?green? guidelines that they must follow in order to be compliant. Whilst this type of construction doesn?t differ too much to the regular type (both require detailed levels of planning and skilled labour), it does take steps to ensure that the buildings affect on the environment is kept at a minimum. It is important to ensure that you are aware of the guidelines that could affect your commercial project. So, what are some of the guidelines that affect the commercial construction of today?

In Michigan, a ballot measure to enshrine union rights

DETROIT | Sun Jul 29, 2012 4:22pm EDT

DETROIT (Reuters) - After suffering a string of political setbacks in the U.S. industrial heartland, organized labor hopes Michigan voters will help turn the tide in a November election by supporting a state constitutional amendment for the right to unionize.

The union-backed ballot proposal would make collective bargaining a constitutionally protected right and cripple efforts to pass so-called "right to work" legislation in the state. Critics say the measure, which would cover private as well as public employees, would be a "death warrant" for Michigan's economy because it would discourage businesses from bringing new jobs to Michigan and encourage some already in the state to leave.

Experts say the union push, which included a door-to-door weekend canvassing effort by delegates attending the Detroit convention of the American Federation of Teachers, is likely to increase voter turnout in the fall presidential election in a state that is too close to call.

A poll released last month by Mitchell Research showed President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in a dead heat in Michigan, where Obama easily beat Republican John McCain in 2008.

"It's a critical time and a critical issue," said Marva Boatman, an AFT conference delegate who is a special education teacher from Washington, D.C., as she rang doorbells and knocked on doors outside Detroit on Saturday, asking voters to support the amendment.

Only a handful of states, including Florida and Missouri, have made unionizing an activity protected by the state constitution, according to F. Vincent Vernuccio, director of labor policy at The Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a free-market think tank focused on Michigan.

But the Mackinac Center and other critics, including the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, say the amendment - which supporters call the "Protect Our Jobs Act" - would be a more sweeping measure.

They claim it would allow public-sector unions to use contract negotiations to override acts of the legislature, such as laws limiting how much taxpayers pay for government employee healthcare.

"It is extremely radical and would fundamentally change the power structure in Michigan," Vernuccio said.

CALLED "ECONOMIC DEATH WARRANT"

Greg Mourad, vice president of the National Right to Work Committee, said if voters approve the measure they will be "signing their own economic death warrant.

"It would make it significantly harder for Michigan to create and attract jobs," Mourad said.

Michigan has been hard hit by the decades-long struggle of the Detroit-based automakers and the continuing restructuring of the domestic car business. One measure of just how much that restructuring has realigned politics in the state can be seen in the fact that Romney, who has criticized the 2009 auto bailout backed by the once-dominant United Auto Workers union, is running so close with Obama.

Supporters of the "Protect Our Jobs" measure submitted nearly 700,000 signed petitions - twice the number needed - to have the proposal put on the November ballot.

The Michigan Department of State is expected to certify the petitions next month after the deadline passes for opponents to submit challenges to the signatures.

Vernuccio said recent polling had shown voters equally divided over the measure.

According to documents filed last week with the Michigan Secretary of State, organized labor and others have raised more than $8 million to support pro-union initiatives in the state this fall.

In addition to the constitutional amendment, unions also are asking Michigan voters to repeal a law giving state-appointed emergency managers wide powers to cut spending in municipalities and school districts deemed to be experiencing a "financial emergency."

That law has been used to take over more than half a dozen financially ailing cities and school systems in the state in recent years and to void union contracts.

Since the Republican victory in the 2010 midterm elections, organized labor has taken a beating in the Midwest, a region that was once a union stronghold.

In June, a union effort to oust Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, a Republican who curbed collective bargaining by public employees in his state in 2011, was handily defeated.

Earlier this year, Indiana became the country's 23rd state, and the first in the industrial heartland, to pass "right to work" legislation that bars employers from signing union contracts that require employees to pay fees for representation.

Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips makes Olympic debut

Zara Phillips, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, made her long-awaited Olympics equestrian debut Sunday, with grandfather Prince Philip and mother, the Princess Royal, lending support.

Phillips was denied the chance to compete at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 after her horse Toytown succumbed to injury.

But the 2006 world eventing champion finally made it at the third attempt, with her new horse, High Kingdom.

Phillips, taking part in the dressage at Greenwich Park, is following in the footsteps of her mother who competed at Montreal in 1976.

After her four-minute routine the judges awarded her a score of 46.10, putting her in the top ten in the individual eventing competition with Britain placed provisional third.

"It's incredible to be selected for the team and to be here at home in London is an amazing feeling and I just want to do my best for the team," she said.

"The Olympics is the greatest show on Earth and it is incredible to be here and to be competing for my country."

On her horse's performance she added: "This was High Kingdom's second biggest test, after the Burleigh Horse Trials, he's only getting better."

"Although he's inexperienced he's coped with the crowds well. He is a chilled character."

She is now looking forward to the second leg of the eventing competition, the cross country, on Monday.

"He's a good jumper, quick to turn and he's bored with dressage now and wants to get out there.

"Cross-country is our strongest phase so we hope we can improve our score."

Great Britain are seeking their first equestrian gold since Munich 1972 with Mark Phillips, Zara's father, who is at London 2012 as manager of the United States squad, on the team.

Nick Diaz, Anderson Silva, Travis Browne and Invicta FC: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.27.12

Howdy. I'm Jim Genia. You might recognize me from such great literary works as "I, Armbar" and "Tito Ortiz's Head: Friend or Foe?" While Maggie Hendricks is covering some sort of athletic event called the "Olympics", I'll be filling in here at Cagewriter.? Yes, it's a temp job, but please think of me as that really cool substitute teacher you had in high school, the one who said nothing when you disrupted class and set fire to the lab, yet did not hesitate?to plant drugs in your locker and call the police.? Heh.? Anyway, here's some news to start your day:

  • Cesar Gracie, coach to the ultra-talented UFC top welterweight contender Nick Diaz, tweeted that there will be an announcement on Graciefighter regarding Diaz's career today?at 4:00 p.m. (PST).? If you'll recall, Nick Diaz... yeesh.? The big question mark these past few months has been whether Diaz has truly?retired or if he'll get in the cage once more.? Therefore, we can expect Gracie's announcement to be one of the following: "Nick Diaz is not going to fight again", "Nick Diaz is going to fight again", and "Can someone tell Nick Diaz to call home?? No one's heard from him in a while and everyone's pretty worried about him."? Stay tuned!

?

  • According to ESPN, UFC middleweight champ and untouchable superstar Anderson Silva wants to fight UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre next.

Of much more interest to Silva are the blockbuster fights that can earn him big money as he nears the end of his career. St-Pierre v Silva undoubtedly would make the biggest Pay-Per-View in UFC history, but while Guimaraes says Silva wants the fight, he admits it has not been offered.

Of course Silva would like St. Pierre in a big-money superfight?next.? Who would you rather fight?? A welterweight champ whose knee could explode at any time, or?UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who sports an eleven-foot reach?and has?murdered everyone put in front of him?? Silva is no dummy.

  • Just yesterday Travis Browne was sad.? Ben Rothwell, who was to be his opponent at next week's UFC on FOX 4, fell prey to the injury bug, and Browne was without a dance partner.? He was subsequently booted from the card.? But it's?a new day, and with this new day comes the?news (courtesy of the good folks at MMAJunkie)?that Browne will now headline UFC on FX 5 in October, facing off against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.? Hooray!? If you'll recall, Browne is big and dangerous and beats people silly - and being big and dangerous and?beating people silly?is good for main events.

?

  • There may be no offerings from the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator this weekend, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way to get your MMA fix.? Invicta Fighting Championships, the all-female MMA promotion, will be having their second installment in Kansas City, KS, and the event will be broadcast for free on their website.? Here's a video promo courtesy of MMAFighting.? There are some extremely skilled and capable female MMA fighters out there, and a bunch of them are on Saturday night's card.

That's all for now.? Now excuse me while I go plant drugs in your locker.

Big AIDS meeting's bottom line: More treatment

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Call it a triple win for fighting the AIDS epidemic: Treating people with HIV early keeps them healthy, cuts their chances of infecting others, and now research shows it's also a good financial investment.

The International AIDS Conference closed Friday with the message that getting treatment to more of the world's 34 million people with HIV is key to curbing the epidemic, short of a vaccine and cure that still are years away.

"It is unacceptable" that scientifically proven treatment and prevention tools aren't reaching people who need them most, Nobel laureate Dr. Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, co-discoverer of the AIDS virus and new president of the International AIDS Society, told the meeting's closing session.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, whose foundation funds HIV work, also addressed the group. "All of you have created the possibility that we could have an AIDS-free generation," he said. "We just have to keep pushing the rocks up the hill."

Spreading treatment will be hugely expensive up-front, but Harvard researchers said Friday that the investment would actually save hard-hit South Africa some money over five years, as savings from treating AIDS-related illnesses exceed the medications' price. Eventually those savings will be overtaken by the costs of treating millions for decades, but treatment-as-prevention still is highly cost-effective, said Dr. Rochelle Walensky of the Harvard Center for AIDS Research.

"People used to think there was no way we can do this," said Dr. Diane Havlir of the University of California, San Francisco, who co-chaired the world's largest AIDS meeting. With both scientific and financial validation, "for the first time we're optimistic that we can."

But new U.S. data show how hard effective treatment is, even in developed countries. Here, most HIV patients have access to treatment, and guidelines say they all should be offered it right after diagnosis. Yet just one in four have their infections under control, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday. Young people and blacks fare the worst.

"We now need big thinking" to improve that number, said Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of CDC's AIDS center, who would like to see it at least doubled soon. "We have the tools. Now we have to move them into real-world policy so they touch the lives of those who need them most."

What to look for next?

?More HIV testing, the first step to knowing who needs treatment. In the U.S., nearly 20 percent of people with HIV don't know they're infected. In some countries, less than half do.

"For every $1 we invest in HIV testing, we recoup $2 in societal benefits," CDC's Fenton said.

?Debate over how best to use another new protection, giving at-risk healthy people the daily AIDS medicine Truvada to lower their risk of infection. In the U.S., it will cost $14,000, and worry emerged at the conference about whether people who took the pill would forgo mainstay protections like condoms.

?Specialists called for overcoming stigma that is blocking the HIV prevention message from reaching many of the people most at risk, especially gay and bisexual men.

Consider Malawi, where homosexuality is illegal and so AIDS prevention stresses heterosexual risk factors, said Johns Hopkins University researcher Andrea Wirtz. Her team managed to study 338 gay men in Malawi, and most said they'd never heard that HIV can be spread through anal sex and didn't know how to reduce their risk, she reported Friday.

__A bigger push for women-controlled preventions when their boyfriends or husbands won't use condoms. Activists asked the U.S. government to send more female condoms to hard-hit poor countries, and research is beginning in Africa on a vaginal ring soaked with a potentially HIV-blocking drug.

?More research to try curing HIV, or to at least put it into remission like cancer, although scientists cautioned that if that is possible, it probably will take 10 years.

?More research into a vaccine, following new clues about a rare kind of antibody that might be able to block HIV from infecting cells.

And the U.S., where patent laws mean HIV treatment costs much more than in poor countries, soon may get a price break. Today, a single daily pill that combines three medications is the first-choice treatment, and costs about $15,000 a year. A generic version of one of those medications, efavirenz, is expected soon.

But to take advantage of it, patients would have to switch to three pills a day, as a combination product won't be available. Harvard's Walensky said if everyone taking one pill a day made that switch, the U.S. health system would save $1 billion the first year ? but she warned that people might not stick with three pills a day as well as they do with one.

Kentucky Health News: Lyme disease in Ky. probably more common ...

Nearly anyone who has spent considerable time in the woods this summer has later discovered they carried a visitor back with them ? one the size of a freckle who latches on for dear life. Ticks are not uncommon in Kentucky, though Lyme disease, which is spread through the bite of a black-legged deer tick, is not commonly seen in the state.

But those numbers are likely under-reported, Keiara Carr reports for The Courier-Journal, in part because "Current medical guidelines say the disease is so rare in Kentucky that doctors should look for alternative causes for symptoms that might suggest Lyme disease."

Only five cases were reported in Kentucky in each of the past two years and there was just one case in 2009. But it's likely cases went under-reported because doctors don't give the blood test that diagnoses Lyme. They just don't feel it's necessary given the rarity of the disease in the area, Carr reports.

But Mike Gatton of Louisville knows all too well that it's possible. He got bitten by a tick while mowing his lawn two years ago. He developed a rash on his leg but when he went to the doctor he was tested for a variety of diseases, including West Nile, multiple sclerosis and Lou Gehrig disease, but not Lyme. "I was feeling more and more fatigued. I was having severe headaches. I was really concerned," he said.

When he got another tick bite a year ago and had the same reaction he had to the first bite, he put the tick in a vial and brought it to his doctor, who still dismissed the possibility of Lyme. He is now being treated with antibiotics he takes intravenously.

Symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, headache and fatigue. Sometimes, a rash that looks like a bull's eye around the tick bite can develop. Usually, people get better with large doses of antibiotics. If left untreated, "the infection can be painful and debilitating, causing arthritis or spreading to the heart and nervous system," Carr reports.

Guidelines by the Infectious Disease Society of America "to help doctors decide if a patient is eligible for treatment say the patient should have received the tick bite in an 'endemic area," Carr reports, which makes sense according to Paul Mead, a consulting physician for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "For example, a physician in Africa evaluating a child for fever should have malaria at the top of his list; a physician in Kentucky should not," he said. (Read more)
