Women apparently have always played the traditional role of nurturer as well as contributing to the community in a variety of ways, while the Restoration of the gospel provides insight into God's view of His daughters, Karen A. Jensen said in her paper prepared for the BYU Religious Education Student Symposium Feb. 17.

"In the end, the place for a woman varies considerably and is of a far more personal nature than it may first appear," said Sister Jensen, a master's degree candidate in marriage, family and human development in the School of Family Life at the university.

"In these, the latter days, we experience many voices clamoring for our attention," she said. "Feminism is one of these voices. It can be argued that there are several types or categories of feminism. ... Motherhood and traditional values, such as home and family, are viewed by some feminists to be 'the roots of women's oppression.' There are also those who find fault with religion ? all religion ? as oppressive to women.

"However, with the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ we are provided with counsel, clarity and comfort. We are taught from a young age that 'I can follow God's plan for me.' Through the lens of the Restoration, we have a more accurate view of men and women alike. This knowledge allows us to rise above the ever-changing philosophies of man; it provides an opportunity to do something extraordinary."

In her paper, Sister Jensen examined the role of women through the ages in the ancient Celtic world, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Pre-Columbian America, the Western world and the Restoration. She concluded: "As individuals, we seek revelation to guide our actions and choices. For women who marry and raise children, the sacred responsibility is clear. It is no accident that we are women, nor is it coincidence that we have come to earth at this place and time. But the path each of us will follow is personal, unique and ours to choose, for a woman's place is shown by the greatest of us all, our Lord Jesus Christ."
