Assad's forces push to retake Damascus suburb

AMMAN (Reuters) - Heavy fighting raged on the outskirts of Damascus on Monday as elite troops backed by tanks tried to recapture a strategic suburb from rebels in one of the largest military operations in that district in months, opposition activists said.

Five people, including one child, died from army rocket fire that hit Daraya, the activists said. Daraya is one of a series of interconnected Sunni Muslim suburbs that ring Syria's capital and have been at the forefront of the 21-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

"This is the biggest attack on Daraya in two months. An armored column is trying to advance but it being held (back) by the Free Syrian Army," said Abu Kinan, an opposition activist in the area, referring to a rebel group.

He said that tens of thousands of civilians had fled Daraya during weeks of government assault but that 5,000 remained, along with hundreds of rebels. Daraya is located near the main southern highway leading to the Jordanian border 85 kms (50 miles) to the south.

Activists said the military is trying to push back rebels who have been slowly advancing from the outskirts of Damascus to within striking distance of central districts inhabited by Assad's Alawite minority sect.

Assad's forces have mostly relied on aerial and artillery bombardment, rather than infantry. Rebels have been able take several outlying towns and have clashed with government troops near Damascus International Airport, halting flights by foreign airlines.

Another activist in Damascus with connection to rebels, who did not want to be named, said Daraya has been a firing position for rebels using mortars and homemade rockets. From it, they have been able to hit a huge presidential complex located at a hilltop overlooking Damascus and target pro-Assad shabbiha militia in an Alawite enclave nearby known as Mezze 86.

"So far they have missed the palace but they are getting better. I think the regime has realized that it no longer can afford to have such a threat so close by, but it has failed to overrun Daraya before," he said.

(AP) ? Deep inside caves, in remote desert bases, in the escarpments and cliff faces of northern Mali, Islamic fighters are burrowing into the earth, erecting a formidable set of defenses to protect what has essentially become al-Qaida's new country.

They have used the bulldozers, earth movers and Caterpillar machines left behind by fleeing construction crews to dig what residents and local officials describe as an elaborate network of tunnels, trenches, shafts and ramparts. In just one case, inside a cave large enough to drive trucks into, they have stored up to 100 drums of gasoline, guaranteeing their fuel supply in the face of a foreign intervention, according to experts.

Northern Mali is now the biggest territory held by al-Qaida and its allies. And as the world hesitates, delaying a military intervention, the extremists who seized control of the area earlier this year are preparing for a war they boast will be worse than the decade-old struggle in Afghanistan.

"Al-Qaida never owned Afghanistan," said former United Nations diplomat Robert Fowler, a Canadian kidnapped and held for 130 days by al-Qaida's local chapter, whose fighters now control the main cities in the north. "They do own northern Mali."

Al-Qaida's affiliate in Africa has been a shadowy presence for years in the forests and deserts of Mali, a country hobbled by poverty and a relentless cycle of hunger. In recent months, the terror syndicate and its allies have taken advantage of political instability within the country to push out of their hiding place and into the towns, taking over an enormous territory which they are using to stock arms, train forces and prepare for global jihad.

The catalyst for the Islamic fighters was a military coup nine months ago that transformed Mali from a once-stable nation to the failed state it is today. On March 21, disgruntled soldiers invaded the presidential palace. The fall of the nation's democratically elected government at the hands of junior officers destroyed the military's command-and-control structure, creating the vacuum which allowed a mix of rebel groups to move in.

With no clear instructions from their higher-ups, the humiliated soldiers left to defend those towns tore off their uniforms, piled into trucks and beat a retreat as far as Mopti, roughly in the center of Mali. They abandoned everything north of this town to the advancing rebels, handing them an area that stretches over more than 620,000 square kilometers (240,000 square miles). It's a territory larger than Texas or France ? and it's almost exactly the size of Afghanistan.

Turbaned fighters now control all the major towns in the north, carrying out amputations in public squares like the Taliban did. Just as in Afghanistan, they are flogging women for not covering up. Since taking control of Timbuktu, they have destroyed seven of the 16 mausoleums listed as world heritage sites.

The area under their rule is mostly desert and sparsely populated, but analysts say that due to its size and the hostile nature of the terrain, rooting out the extremists here could prove even more difficult than it did in Afghanistan. Mali's former president has acknowledged, diplomatic cables show, that the country cannot patrol a frontier twice the length of the border between the United States and Mexico.

Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, known as AQIM, operates not just in Mali, but in a corridor along much of the northern Sahel. This 7,000-kilometer (4,300-mile) long ribbon of land runs across the widest part of Africa, and includes sections of Mauritania, Niger, Algeria, Libya, Burkina Faso and Chad.

"One could come up with a conceivable containment strategy for the Swat Valley," said Africa expert Peter Pham, an adviser to the U.S. military's African command center, referring to the region of Pakistan where the Pakistan Taliban have been based. "There's no containment strategy for the Sahel, which runs from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea."

Earlier this year, the 15 nations in West Africa, including Mali, agreed on a proposal for the military to take back the north, and sought backing from the United Nations. Earlier this month, the Security Council authorized the intervention but imposed certain conditions, including training Mali's military, which is accused of serious human rights abuses since the coup. Diplomats say the intervention will likely not happen before September of 2013.

In the meantime, the Islamists are getting ready, according to elected officials and residents in Kidal, Timbuktu and Gao, including a day laborer hired by al-Qaida's local chapter to clear rocks and debris for one of their defenses. They spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear for their safety at the hands of the Islamists, who have previously accused those who speak to reporters of espionage.

The al-Qaida affiliate, which became part of the terror network in 2006, is one of three Islamist groups in northern Mali. The others are the Movement for the Unity and Jihad in West Africa, or MUJAO, based in Gao, and Ansar Dine, based in Kidal. Analysts agree that there is considerable overlap between the groups, and that all three can be considered sympathizers, even extensions, of al-Qaida.

The Islamic fighters have stolen equipment from construction companies, including more than $11 million worth from a French company called SOGEA-SATOM, according to Elie Arama, who works with the European Development Fund. The company had been contracted to build a European Union-financed highway in the north between Timbuktu and the village of Goma Coura. An employee of SOGEA-SATOM in Bamako declined to comment.

The official from Kidal said his constituents have reported seeing Islamic fighters with construction equipment riding in convoys behind 4-by-4 trucks draped with their signature black flag. His contacts among the fighters, including friends from secondary school, have told him they have created two bases, around 200 to 300 kilometers (120 and 180 miles) north of Kidal, in the austere, rocky desert.

The first base is occupied by al-Qaida's local fighters in the hills of Teghergharte, a region the official compared to Afghanistan's Tora Bora.

"The Islamists have dug tunnels, made roads, they've brought in generators, and solar panels in order to have electricity," he said. "They live inside the rocks."

Still further north, near Boghassa, is the second base, created by fighters from Ansar Dine. They too have used seized explosives, bulldozers and sledgehammers to make passages in the hills, he said.

In addition to creating defenses, the fighters are amassing supplies, experts said. A local who was taken by Islamists into a cave in the region of Kidal described an enormous room, where several cars were parked. Along the walls, he counted up to 100 barrels of gasoline, according to the man's testimony to New York-based Human Rights Watch.

In Timbuktu, the fighters are becoming more entrenched with each passing day, warned Mayor Ousmane Halle. Earlier in the year, he said, the Islamists left his city in a hurry after France called for an imminent military intervention. They returned when the U.N. released a report arguing for a more cautious approach.

"At first you could see that they were anxious," said Halle by telephone. "The more the date is pushed back, the more reinforcements they are able to get, the more prepared they become."

In the regional capital of Gao, a young man told The Associated Press that he and several others were offered 10,000 francs a day by al-Qaida's local commanders (around $20), a rate several times the normal wage, to clear rocks and debris, and dig trenches. The youth said he saw Caterpillars and earth movers inside an Islamist camp at a former Malian military base 7 kilometers (4 miles) from Gao.

The fighters are piling mountains of sand from the ground along the dirt roads to force cars onto the pavement, where they have checkpoints everywhere, he said. In addition, they are modifying their all-terrain vehicles to mount them with arms.

"On the backs of their cars, it looks like they are mounting pipes," he said, describing a shape he thinks might be a rocket or missile launcher. "They are preparing themselves. Everyone is scared."

A university student from Gao confirmed seeing the modified cars. He said he also saw deep holes dug on the sides of the highway, possibly to give protection to fighters shooting at cars, along with cement barriers with small holes for guns.

In Gao, residents routinely see Moktar Belmoktar, the one-eyed emir of the al-Qaida-linked cell that grabbed Fowler in 2008. Belmoktar, a native Algerian, traveled to Afghanistan in the 1980s and trained in Osama bin Laden's camp in Jalalabad, according to research by the Jamestown Foundation. His lieutenant Oumar Ould Hamaha, whom Fowler identified as one of his captors, brushed off questions about the tunnels and caves but said the fighters are prepared.

"We consider this land our land. It's an Islamic territory," he said, reached by telephone in an undisclosed location. "Right now our field of operation is Mali. If they bomb us, we are going to hit back everywhere."

He added that the threat of military intervention has helped recruit new fighters, including from Western countries.

In December, two U.S. citizens from Alabama were arrested on terrorism charges, accused of planning to fly to Morocco and travel by land to Mali to wage jihad, or holy war. Two French nationals have also been detained on suspicion of trying to travel to northern Mali to join the Islamists. Hamaha himself said he spent a month in France preaching his fundamentalist version of Islam in Parisian mosques after receiving a visa for all European Union countries in 2001.

Hamaha indicated the Islamists have inherited stores of Russian-made arms from former Malian army bases, as well as from the arsenal of toppled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, a claim that military experts have confirmed.

Those weapons include the SA-7 and SA-2 surface-to-air missiles, according to Hamaha, which can shoot down aircrafts. His claim could not be verified, but Rudolph Atallah, the former counterterrorism director for Africa in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, said it makes sense.

"Gadhafi bought everything under the sun," said Atallah, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, who has traveled extensively to Mali on defense missions. "His weapons depots were packed with all kinds of stuff, so it's plausible that AQIM now has surface-to-air missiles."

Depending on the model, these missiles can range far enough to bring down planes used by ill-equipped African air forces, although not those used by U.S. and other Western forces, he said. There is significant disagreement in the international community on whether Western countries will carry out the planned bombardments.

The Islamists' recent advances draw on al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb's near decade of experience in Mali's northern desert, where Fowler and his fellow U.N. colleague were held captive for four months in 2008, an experience he recounts in his recent book, "A Season in Hell."

Originally from Algeria, the fighters fled across the border into Mali in 2003, after kidnapping 32 European tourists. Over the next decade, they used the country's vast northern desert to hold French, Spanish, Swiss, German, British, Austrian, Italian and Canadian hostages, raising an estimated $89 million in ransom payments, according to Stratfor, a global intelligence company.

During this time, they also established relationships with local clans, nurturing the ties that now protect them. Several commanders have taken local wives, and Hamaha, whose family is from Kidal, confirmed that Belmoktar is married to his niece.

Fowler described being driven for days by jihadists who knew Mali's featureless terrain by heart, navigating valleys of identical dunes with nothing more than the direction of the sun as their map. He saw them drive up to a thorn tree in the middle of nowhere to find barrels of diesel fuel. Elsewhere, he saw them dig a pit in the sand and bury a bag of boots, marking the spot on a GPS for future use.

In his four-month-long captivity, Fowler never saw his captors refill at a gas station, or shop in a market. Yet they never ran out of gas. And although their diet was meager, they never ran out of food, a testament to the extensive supply network which they set up and are now refining and expanding.

Among the many challenges an invading army will face is the inhospitable terrain, Fowler said, which is so hot that at times "it was difficult to draw breath." A cable published by WikiLeaks from the U.S. Embassy in Bamako described how even the Malian troops deployed in the north before the coup could only work from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m., and spent the sunlight hours in the shade of their vehicles.

Yet Fowler said he saw al-Qaida fighters chant Quranic verses under the Sahara sun for hours, just one sign of their deep, ideological commitment.

"I have never seen a more focused group of young men," said Fowler, who now lives in Ottawa, Canada. "No one is sneaking off for R&R. They have left their wives and children behind. They believe they are on their way to paradise."

Potential heir to $300 million fortune found dead

A long-lost relative of the reclusive heiress Huguette Clark, who could have inherited $19 million of her $300 million fortune, has been found dead under a Union Pacific Railroad overpass in Wyoming.

Children sledding found the body of Timothy Henry Gray, 60, Thursday afternoon in Evanston, a small mining town in southwestern Wyoming near the Utah border. The coroner said it appeared he died of hypothermia. The low temperature that day was 10 degrees, and had hit zero in the previous week. Lt. Bill Jeffers of the Evanston Police Department said there was no evidence of foul play, and Gray was wearing a light jacket. Gray's siblings said they hadn't heard from him since their?mother's funeral in 1990, when he disappeared without a word.??It wasn't clear whether Gray was living under the overpass, where transients have been known to camp.

Tim Gray was an adopted great-grandson of former U.S. Sen. William Andrews Clark, known as one of the copper kings of Montana, a banker, a builder of railroads and the founder of Las Vegas. The senator's youngest daughter, Huguette Clark, was a recluse who died in 2011 in New York City at age 104, after living in hospitals for 20 years while her palatial homes sat unused. Gray was her half great-nephew.

In her will, Huguette Clark left no money at all to her family, leaving it instead to?her nurse, goddaughter, attorney, accountant, hospital, doctor, favorite museum and various employees, as well as? to an art foundation to be set up at her oceanfront estate in Santa Barbara, Calif. ?None of her relatives had seen Clark in at least 40 years, though some had been in touch with her through holiday cards and occasional phone calls.

Nineteen of Clark's relatives have stepped forward to challenge her will in a New York court. A public administrator joined the challenge on behalf of Gray. When lawyers tried to find him to let him know about the Clark estate battle, they found his belongings had been abandoned in a storage locker, according to court records, and private investigators were not able to find him.

If the relatives win their court challenge, Gray's estate would be entitled to about $19 million before taxes, or 6.25 percent of Clark's copper mining fortune, which has been conservatively estimated at $307 million by the administrator of Huguette Clark's estate. If Gray, who apparently had no spouse or children, died without a will, his siblings would receive his share in addition to their own.

Gray was not using the money he already had. The coroner said Gray's wallet contained a cashier's check, from 2003, for "a significant amount."

Gray's older brother, Jerry, said Tim had worked as a cowboy and lived in the Rocky Mountain states.?"He was homeless essentially. If we had proper mental health services in this country, we could have been notified and known to do something."

Huguette Clark attracted the attention of NBC News in 2009 because of her vacant but well-manicured mansions and questions about the management of her money. The battle over her estate could go before a jury in 2013, though settlement talks have begun.

NBA scores: Warriors and Kings get home wins on Friday

James Johnson hits game-winner in Sacramento victory over New York, while Golden State dominates the boards in a win over Philadelphia.

Both Golden State and Sacramento picked up home wins over Eastern Conference opponents Friday night.

Golden State 96 - Philadelphia 89

The Golden State Warriors improved their record to 20-10 with a 96-89 win over the Philadelphia 76ers Friday night at Oracle Arena. The Warriors, who had six players in double figures, were led by a double-double from forward David Lee. The veteran power forward scored a team-high 23 points and added 12 rebounds. Forward Carl Landry added 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Guards Stephen Curry and Jarrett Jack each had six assists. The win helped Golden State maintain its second place position in the Pacific Division, four games back of the Clippers.

Sacramento 106 - New York 105

Kings forward James Johnson made a last-second three point shot, giving Sacramento a surprising 106-105 win over the New York Knicks Friday. Sacramento had built a 21-point halftime lead, but a furious New York comeback gave the visitors the lead with six minutes left to play. With the Kings down two and less than 20 seconds to play, DeMarcus Cousins stole a Jason Kidd pass. Johnson took a pass from John Salmons at the top of the key and drained the game-winning shot. Johnson finished with 17 points. Marcus Thornton led the team with 18 points, and DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmer Fredette each had 15.

Elsewhere, the Clippers destroyed Boston 106-77 Thursday night and defeated Utah 116-114 Friday, Tony Parker scored 31 as San Antonio topped Houston 122-116, and the Lakers got back to .500 on the year with a 104-87 win over Portland.

AP sources: Reid won't be back as Eagles' coach

(AP) ? Andy Reid is out after 14 years coaching the Philadelphia Eagles, three people familiar with the decision told The Associated Press following Sunday's 42-7 season-ending loss to the New York Giants.

Reid is scheduled to meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Monday to discuss his future and an official announcement will come afterward, according to one person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because a final agreement hasn't been reached. That person says there's a chance Reid might remain with the team in some capacity.

Reid is due to make $6 million in 2013 in the final year of his contract. He said he wants to coach next year, but it's possible Lurie could persuade him to take a season off and perhaps help out in the front office in an "advisory" role.

Eagles spokesman Derek Boyko denied several reports that Lurie has already fired Reid, saying it's "absolutely, 100 percent" untrue.

The Eagles (4-12) finished their worst season under Reid by losing 11 of their last 12 games. They missed the playoffs two straight years for the first time under Reid.

After the ugly loss to the Giants (9-7), Reid sounded like a man who knew he was going to lose his job.

"We weren't very good," Reid said. "That's my responsibility and I take complete blame for it."

Asked if he wants to return in 2013, Reid said: "I'm all in."

Lurie said after the Eagles went 8-8 in 2011 that he considered firing Reid. He gave him another chance, but said before this season that 8-8 would be "unacceptable."

"I go in eyes wide open," Reid said of his meeting with Lurie. "Either way, I understand. Whatever he chooses will be the right thing. He always does things for the best interests of the Eagles."

Reid won more games (140) than any coach in franchise history. He led the Eagles to nine playoff appearances, six division titles, five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl loss.

But he couldn't win the big one and that's how he's measured in a city that hasn't celebrated an NFL title since 1960.

The Eagles haven't won a playoff game since 2008 and took significant steps backward the last two years. They entered both seasons with high expectations only to fail miserably.

"We had quite a run," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said.

Players said they expect changes, but continued to support Reid.

"He's a great man and I love him to death," said quarterback Michael Vick, who could've played his last game with the Eagles. "I wish I could've done more. A lot of players wish they could've done more. Coaches can't play the games."

The Eagles talked all week about wanting to win one for Reid. Instead, they suffered another embarrassing loss to cap a dismal season.

"We came, we stunk it up and we lost. It was terrible. No heart," defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins said.

Like Jenkins, Vick also questioned his teammates' desire before trying to clarify his comment.

"It's frustrating," Vick said. "It's difficult because, me, I leave it all out on the field and I give everything I got. Sometimes, I wish I could play other positions, but I can't."

Vick was 19 of 35 for 197 yards, one TD and one interception in his first game since Nov. 11. He missed the previous six games, sitting out the first five with a concussion and then being inactive last week. Vick only got the start because rookie Nick Foles broke his hand.

Vick is due to earn about $16 million next year, but the Eagles can release him without taking a financial hit. He wants to be a starter and is unsure whether he even wants to come back.

"I don't know. I have to take time to think about everything that's happened," Vick said.

This already was a difficult year for Reid. He endured a devastating loss weeks before the season opener when his oldest son, Garrett Reid, died at training camp after a long battle with drug addiction.

In October, Reid fired close friend and longtime assistant Juan Castillo, who was in his second season as defensive coordinator after coaching the offensive line for 13 years. He later fired defensive-line coach Jim Washburn.

After beating the defending Super Bowl champion Giants on Sept. 30, the Eagles lost eight straight games ? their worst losing streak in 42 years.

Before coming to Philadelphia, Reid was an offensive assistant for six seasons under Mike Holmgren in Green Bay and was instrumental in Brett Favre's growth. Reid inherited a team that went 3-13 under Ray Rhodes in 1998 and was a laughingstock in the NFL. He was an unpopular choice among fans in Philadelphia. But Reid won them over quickly by turning the Eagles into a playoff team in just his second season.

Reid drafted Donovan McNabb with the No. 2 pick in the 1999 draft and developed him into a six-time Pro Bowl quarterback. Reid and McNabb guided the Eagles to five straight playoff appearances from 2000-04. They went to the NFC title game four consecutive years, finally winning one in January 2005 over the Atlanta Falcons. But the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots 24-21 in the Super Bowl, and have missed the playoffs in four of the last eight years.

Reid's tenure in Philadelphia included several controversial decisions. He brought in star wide receiver Terrell Owens here in 2004, finally giving McNabb a legitimate target. T.O. had an outstanding year, overcame a late-season injury and returned to have an excellent game in the Super Bowl. But Owens feuded with management and McNabb the next season and Reid kicked him off the team in November 2005.

In 2009, Reid and Lurie gave Vick a second chance in the NFL after the former star quarterback had spent 18 months in federal prison for dogfighting charges. Vick took over as the starter in 2010, had a remarkable season and led the Eagles to the NFC East title.

The decision to switch Castillo from offense to defense may have been Reid's worst mistake. The unusual move was heavily criticized and contributed to the defense's collapse.

"I'll always put it on the players," Jenkins said. "Coaches can only do so much. Players have to step up and make plays."

Reid's stoic personality and bland news conferences annoyed fans and even some members of the media. He refused to call out players and always took the blame after each loss, saying he had to "do a better job" and "put players in better position to perform."

While that didn't make him popular outside the locker room, Reid was respected by his players. They supported him to the end.

"He's a great coach, a great person. I love the guy," safety Kurt Coleman said.

Former President George H.W. Bush out of intensive care

Former President George H.W. Bush was moved Saturday out of the intensive care unit of the Houston hospital where he has been for more than a month.

"President Bush's condition has improved, so he has been moved today from the intensive care unit to a regular patient room at The Methodist Hospital to continue his recovery," his office said in a statement distributed by spokesman Jim McGrath.

Bush was moved to the intensive care unit last Sunday as doctors worked to control "a stubborn fever," McGrath said at the time. He was listed at the time in guarded condition.

Bush was initially hospitalized with bronchitis and remained in the hospital for a lingering cough. He was admitted from November 7 through 9, then returned on November 23. He has remained at the hospital since. Before his ICU admission, Bush was undergoing physical therapy as doctors prepared to have him home for Christmas.

While in the intensive care unit, Bush was on a liquid diet. It was not immediately clear on Saturday whether he remained on that modified diet.

On Friday, McGrath signaled that the former president was improving.

"The president is alert and, as always, in good spirits - and his exchanges with doctors and nurses now include singing. The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes and, like their doctors, are cautiously optimistic that the current course of treatment will be effective."

That same day, Bush took a call from one of his favorite bands: the Oak Ridge Boys.

The gospel-turned-country crooners returned from their vacation, members said, to serenade the former president by phone at the request of former first lady Barbara Bush.

"We asked what song he would like to hear and he said, 'Elvira,' so we blasted some oom pop a mau mau's in the direction of Houston, Texas," band member Joe Bonsall said.

You?re probably aware of the advantages and the possibilities involved in cosmetic surgery. You might have a favorite entertainment personality who is already familiar with plastic surgery. However, the situation may be different when you are the patient. You need to consider some important questions, and this article will help you do so.

Take the time to ask about your recovery time and post surgery needs. You may need to recuperate for some time before resuming your regular routine with some procedures. It?s vitally important that you get enough time to heal, so you should have a good idea of just how long your recuperation will take.

Surgery should be your last resort after trying other solutions. Many factors contribute to your overall appearance that will be unaffected by your surgery, so you must think about important long term lifestyle changes. Look to your eating habits and mood for possible issues to confront, before going under the knife.

Cosmetic procedures can be quite costly, and may also require you to miss work. For these 2 reasons, it?s recommended that you have a small amount of money saved for the expenses that come up from the procedure, as well as the expenses that come after the operation. This will help prevent stress and keep you focused on successfully recovering from your surgery.

You should be prepared for the pain and the scarring that accompanies cosmetic surgery procedures. A lot of people aren?t aware of the painful effects associated with cosmetic surgical procedures. You?ll heal faster if you are mentally ready for the pain you will feel in recovery.

Any cosmetic surgeon should have a good insurance policy for malpractice. This can have a huge impact on you if your procedure develops complications; a proper insurance policy will protect you from unfair out-of-pocket expenses. If your surgeon is not insured, you will want to look for alternative doctors.

It is essential that if you plan to have plastic surgery, you also know what to expect during your recovery. You must do exactly as the doctor says during this time to ensure proper healing and optimum results. The initial two weeks of recovery are the ones which impact results the greatest.

Flesh Wounds: The Culture of Cosmetic SurgeryFlesh Wounds: The Culture of Cosmetic SurgeryWhen did cosmetic surgery become a common practice, the stuff of everyday conversation? In a work that combines a provocative ethnography of plastic surgery and a penetrating analysis of beauty and feminism, Virginia L. Blum searches out the social conditions and imperatives that have made ours a culture of cosmetic surgery. From diverse viewpoints, ranging from cosmetic surgery patient to feminist cultural critic, she looks into the realities and fantasies that have made physical malleability an essential part of our modern-day identity.
For a cultural practice to develop such a tenacious grip, Blum argues, it must be fed from multiple directions: some pragmatic, including the profit motive of surgeons and the increasing need to appear young on the job; some philosophical, such as the notion that a new body is something you can buy or that appearance changes your life. Flesh Wounds is an inquiry into the ideas and practices that have forged such a culture. Tying the boom in cosmetic surgery to a culture-wide trend toward celebrity, Blum explores our growing compulsion to emulate what remain for most of us two-dimensional icons. Moving between personal experiences and observations, interviews with patients and surgeons, and readings of literature and cultural moments, her book reveals the ways in which the practice of cosmetic surgery captures the condition of identity in contemporary culture.

NASA prepares twin spacecraft for crash landing

Ebb and Flow, two spacecraft that have been investigating the moon's gravitational field, will end their existence by smashing into the moon's north pole next week. The event is not likely to be visible from Earth, but the?Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter?may catch a glimpse. ? ?

After nearly a year circling the moon,?NASA's?Ebb and Flow will meet their demise when they crash ? on purpose ? into the lunar surface.

Just don't expect to see celestial fireworks. Next week's impact near the moon's north pole by the washing machine-sized spacecraft won't carve a gaping crater or kick up a lot of debris. And it'll be dark when it happens.

"We are not expecting a big flash or a big explosion" that will be visible from Earth, said mission chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Still, it'll mark a violent end to a successful mission that has produced the most high-resolution gravity maps of Earth's closest neighbor. On Friday, engineers will turn off the science instruments in preparation for Monday's finale.

Previous unmanned trips to the moon have studied its lumpy gravitational field, but Ebb and Flow are the first ones dedicated to this goal. Since entering orbit over New Year's weekend, the formation-flying spacecraft have peered past the craggy surface into the interior.

Initially, the spacecraft flew about 35 miles (56 kilometers) above the surface and later dropped down to 14 miles (22 kilometers). About an hour before Monday's impact, they will fire their engines until they run out of fuel and slam at 3,800 mph (6,115 kph) into a predetermined target ? a mountain near the north pole that's far away from the Apollo landing sites.

Ebb will hit first followed by Flow 20 seconds later. Though the drama won't be visible from Earth, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will fly over the crash site afterward and attempt to spot them.

The last time?NASA?aimed at the moon was in 2009. The world watched through telescopes and over the Internet as a spacecraft and its booster rocket smashed into a permanently shadowed crater ? a one-two punch that fizzled when spectators saw little more than a fuzzy white flash.

The mission's end will also mark the close of a student campaign that used cameras aboard the spacecraft to image lunar targets including on the moon's far side. The MoonKAM project was spearheaded by a science education company founded by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Ride died of pancreatic cancer in July at age 61.

Even after Ebb and Flow complete their mission, scientists will continue to pore over the bounty of data they collected.

Among their findings so far: The moon is more beat up than previously imagined. The crust is much thinner than thought. And there's no evidence that Earth once had two moons that collided to form the one we see in the night sky.

Airlines Waiving Change Fees for Delayed Travelers | Travel ...

Due to the recent line of winter storms stretching across the midwest and northeast, many airlines are waiving the change fees associated with flight cancellations and delays at several airports across Indiana, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Vermont. Those looking to continue on with a trip may be able to turn to their airline to change flights without paying associated fees or fare differences.

This time of year is specifically prone to these kinds of travel interruptions. Luckily, many airlines are more lenient during mass travel disruptions in an effort to ease the tension and stress during these winter storms.

Additionally, those who have travel insurance policies in place may find relief for some costly expenses related to delays and cancellations. Travel delay, trip interruption and trip cancellation are some of the most valuable benefits that may provide relief to travelers burdened by extra costs or complete cancellation of travel arrangements.

Travelers should check policy details for specific weather-related benefits to see if coverage applies.

Ask Engadget: best barebones workstation chassis?

Ask Engadget best barebones workstation chassis

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Charles, who's capping off the year with a fine question about DIY PC chassis. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I work in motion graphics and it's upgrade time. I'm a DIY and Windows nut, so I'm looking to build my own tower, but the cases are all so horrible! I don't need a plastic window, or something that looks like it was designed by aliens -- just something that's sharp, solid, good looking and has a respectable airflow. Is that too much to ask?"

Well, we trawled our brains (as well as a fair chunk of the internet) looking for some classy chassis, and this is what we found:

  • Corsair's Obsidian 550D may have a plastic window, but otherwise it's a monolithic piece of imposing black metal that won't ugly up your office.
  • Coolermaster's Silencio 650 is hewn from diamond-cut aluminum and drops the plastic window, and given the company's heritage, should have excellent airflow.
  • Finally, there's the Lian-Li PC-A71F, which can only be described as terrifyingly sleek.

But what about you all? Let's cap the year off with some stylish PC cases, peace and goodwill to everyone and a very happy New Year to you, the Engadgeteers.

The Swamplot Awards for Houston Real Estate, 2012: The Winners ...

And here they are: the results of the fifth annual Swamplot Awards for Houston Real Estate! Who won what in this year?s competition? You?ll find the answers below.

This announcement caps an almost month-long process that began with calls for nominations in 7 separate award categories. Official ballots were assembled from reader nominations. Then voting was opened up ? to everyone.

Winners of the 2012 Swampies: We salute you for your unique contributions to this city. It takes something special to stand out in Houston?s real estate landscape. On Swamplot, Houston real-estate fans have noticed you!

Big thanks are due the many Swamplot readers who took time to nominate, evaluate, vote, and comment on competitors in each category. It?s your judgments, your descriptions, and your observations that are featured below. Does this honor roll of award winners ? along with the list of runners up ? provide a good snapshot of the year in Houston real estate? All were determined by reader votes. Let us know what you think!

The winners of the 2012 Swamplot Awards for Houston Real Estate are . . .

* * *

1. Favorite Houston Design Clich?. Award winner: Humping Bungalows, aka Humper Houses.

The nomination: ?They look like a McMansion or awkwardly proportioned 2-story bungalow went into heat and decided to mount an old bungalow from behind. Many preservationists consider this sort of ?back door? addition a way to ?save? an old house by, uh . . . pumping new life into it. City design guidelines for historic districts actually encourage this renovation strategy, though they refer to it more gently as a ?camelback? addition. Whatever you call it, the resulting indignity is usually difficult to ignore ? though it?s often not entirely obvious who?s getting screwed.?

  • From Carrie: ?Silly looking on the outside, awkward on the inside.?
  • From bigintexas33: ?How else can you have a 1910 bungalow with 90% new construction??
  • From RobertInHeights: ?The Humping Bungalow is a uniquely Houston design atrocity.?
  • From heyzeus: ?Humping bungalows are happening here in Austin too, perhaps even moreso because of the ?McMansion Ordinance? that prevents almost any other kind of expansion.?
  • From Roy: ?The humper is just the latest form and revival of the camelback shotgun, it is just being done to bungalows now. My grandmother was living in one during the Mississippi flood of 1927, so it is an old solution.?
  • From ex-Park Memorial: ?It takes a good architect to make one work. Sadly, good architects are not being hired very often.?
  • From Spencer Howard: ?I refuse to design these. I always tell my clients they should just buy a different house in a different neighborhood because they obviously don?t like bungalows or historic districts.?
  • From chris: ?I think the humper houses are pretty awkward looking, but it is better than tearing the old house down and building town houses.?
  • From Annie: ?We are proud to have built the Heights? only non-humping addition to a bungalow in 2012.?

Runner-up: The Sago Palm. Other nominees in this category: ?Urban-Style? Neighborhoods in Far-Flung Communities, Gentle Arc Roofs, the Mixed Glass and Concrete Gridded Look for Highrise Office Buildings, Whitewashed and Partly Whitewashed Brick, Knock Out Roses.

2. Best Demolition. Award winner: Park Memorial Condominiums, 5292 Memorial Dr., Rice Military.

The nomination: ?The demise of this garden-style condo complex already qualified as a slow-motion real-estate disaster long before the body was discovered. Yes, this was the compound at Memorial and Detering that city officials, fearful of imminent structural collapse, ordered shut down more than 4 years ago. Locked out of their homes, many residents were forced to sell their units at a significant loss, go bankrupt, or both; others took the city to court over the hasty eviction order. A few residents fought plans to sell the property. Earlier this year, JLB Partners finally managed to carry out a purchase agreement with as many as 108 separate property owners. The developers plan to build a new 5- and 6-story apartment complex on the property, more than tripling the density of the 4.85 acres. By the time demolition crews moved onto the scene this past summer, though, it seemed as if the site?s problems were ancient history. And indeed they now seem to be: Skeletal remains discovered under a removed foundation ? which authorities at first thought might be signs of 1980s-era foul play ? have since been identified as remnants of a somehow-forgotten African-American cemetery that once stood there.?

  • From Old School: ?The only building nominated that actually had to be torn down.?
  • From Lost_in_Translation: ?So much suffering finally put out of its misery.?
  • From NorhillJoe: ?Emergency evictions and skeletal remains. No place but Houston.?

Runner-up: 3640 Willowick Rd., River Oaks. Other nominees in this category: Former Home of the MuffinMan, East Montrose; Houston Main Building (former Prudential Tower), Texas Medical Center; Ben Milam Hotel, Downtown; 77018; Katy Prairie Animal and Plant Habitat.

3. The Swamplot Award for Special Achievement in Traffic. Award winner: Private Traffic Cops.

The nomination: ?Throughout the Galleria at rush hour, off-duty cops hired by office buildings stop traffic so people can pull out of lots and garages, causing huge backups through multiple intersections on the main roads. Why is this even allowed??

  • From matx: ?It?s an overused privilege and disrupts traffic patterns.?
  • From Al: ?A problem all over town.?
  • From #328: ?I find it odd how the needs of the few individuals in their cars trying to exit a parking garage should impede the needs of the many other individuals already on the streets.?
  • From kbates2: ?There are a couple of cops downtown that will tell pedestrians to stop walking as well as stop 200 cars from driving to let the one person come out the second that they pull up.?
  • From Golyadkin: ?. . . when you are actually trying to pull out, they get VERY angry with you if you don?t pull out incredibly quickly and into the exact lane they want you in.?
  • From bigintexas33: ?Depends mostly on the cop directing traffic. When directed properly, flow isn?t impeded as much. And apparently none of the complainers have ever been on the beneficial side of this ? in some instances without the cops people would never get out of their garages. Not to mention the dangers of pedestrians crossing in front of blind exits, etc. Definitely abused in some places, but on the whole is a necessary service.?

Runners-up: The West Alabama St. Reversible Center Lane and Feeder Road Construction Along I-10 between Washington and Taylor. Other nominees in this category: The Yale St. Bridge, Ashby Highrise Bissonnet Park-In, Free Tuesdays at the Houston Zoo, Low Speed Limits in Unincorporated Harris and Northern Brazoria Counties, HOT Lanes, Ella Blvd. between 43rd St. and Loop 610.

4. The ?It?s Alive!? Award. Award winner: 1624 Holman Apartments, 1624 and 1630 Holman St. and 3508 Mosley Ct., Midtown.

The nomination: ?We thought for sure this place would be a goner. A few months ago new owners took over and it?s been completely different. We haven?t seen any of the drug dealers or prostitutes we?d see daily before. No more condom wrappers and needles in the street. My wife literally cried with joy at the improvements; we no longer feel we have to move. No, it?s not much different looking from the street, and there?s still plenty of work to do. In the common area of one of the buildings, most of the interior windows were boarded up; there was busted drywall and hand drawn ?NO SLEEPING IN THE HALLWAY? signs. But that?s all been fixed. It?s now clean and painted, with new hall windows and doors. This complex was for sure bound for the wrecking ball or at least to be boarded up. Now it?s becoming quite a nice place.?

  • From Cody: ?It was knocking on death?s door. The city would have loved it blown up. It?s old and ugly in a ?hot? area of town. It had all the markings of something about to be toast.?
  • From coconutbutter: ?This is a building that had ?tear me down? and ?put me out of my misery? written all over it. Instead of destroying it and putting up a bunch of townhomes (or whatever is the trend du jour), the new owners began restoring it while bringing in/attracting stable tenants. . . . For a property that looked like it was condemned to die, it certainly got a well-deserved second chance!?
  • From Superdave: ?It exemplifies taking the high road in real estate . . . saving a building that still has residual value, giving it a noble purpose, and most importantly . . . keeping townhomes at bay.?
  • From Robert Boyd: ?It demonstrates that when a owner or manager of a property decides not to to be a slumlord, it can make a huge difference.?

Runner-up: Penguin Arms Apartments, Upper Kirby. Other nominees in this category: The University Line; I-45 Expansion; Repurposed Commercial Buildings in the Greater Heights Area; Lucky Burger, Montrose; AIG, America Tower, North Montrose; the Astrodome; Crooms Cemetery, under Park Memorial Condominiums, Rice Military.

5. Most Overlooked Neighborhood. Award winner: Sharpstown Country Club Terrace.

The nomination: ?It?s only a matter of time before the location, lot sizes, availability of good private schools, and affordability get noticed. For now, though, the Sharpstown stigma helps keep it under wraps.?

  • From Diane: ?One of the least-expensive neighborhoods close in. Well-built homes, lots of people moving in and renovating. Plenty of new commercial/institutional investment into the area, as well. St. Agnes Athletic Complex, new Neff Elementary, new St. Francis de Sales Church, etc., as well as more building to come (HBU, Sharpstown International, etc.). Great restaurants of every cuisine ? various Asian, Mexican, Indian, American, etc. within walking distance.?
  • From ZAW: ?Sharpstown County Club Terrace offers larger, somewhat newer houses than Sharpstown ? and it?s amazingly close to everything. The single-family areas of Sharpstown are very safe; the Sharpstown Stigma is almost entirely due to the multifamily and commercial areas around it; not the neighborhood itself.?
  • From Michal Woods: ?Sharpstown in general has made many improvements these past few years; I think it?s time people take notice to these changes.?
  • From Skarner: ?Great location and very under-rated value wise, and that abundance of luscious Latinas is a perk.?
  • From jose: ?I LOOOVVVVE the food in the area and the neighborhood itself seems to be picking up. Apartments are bad but the worst ones are being demolished. The complex next to Sharpstown high school was destroyed thankfully because it was a crime hot spot; I?m wondering what they will do with the land.?
  • From Amy: ?The lot sizes are large, great neighbors, and the crime is low (you can leave your garage door open at night and nothing will be missing in the morning). I love that long term residents still reside here as well as a mix of families . . . the houses and yards are well kept. The apartments are a whole nother story . . . but Rome wasn?t built in one day!?
  • From Well?: ?The solution to the neighborhood being overlooked is probably not voting here, but getting rid of the dicey apartments that engulf it ? or perhaps even working with the owners to clean them up.?

Runner-up: Sharpstown. Other nominees in this category: Park Place; Willowbend, Willowbrook, and Post Oak Manor; Afton Village; Acres Homes; Mangum Manor; Shepherd Park Terrace; Westbury; Spring Shadows; Museum Park.

6. Neighborhood of the Year. Award winner: Meadowcreek Village.

The nomination: ?A beautiful neighborhood with an active civic club and park director. Huge wooded lots, with the majority of them backing up to Berry Creek or a natural gully. Right outside the 610 Loop, close to everything but far enough away to have the kind of lot space that?s usually unheard of so close to town. Plenty of midcentury Mods here ? one of which was recently featured in the Houston Architectural Guide. Reasonable home prices; home to some elected officials, journalists, and young professionals. A true gem!?

  • From ECP: ?Kids leave their bikes in the middle of the street & neighbors walk them back over to the owners. The civic club is active and has a good relationship with HPD. The lots are spacious and so are the houses. The neighborhood enjoys a great nature life as well ? blue herons, fresh water otters, turtles, ducks, fish and lots of mature pine, oak, weeping willow, pecan, lemon & orange trees. Its location is perfect ? just outside the loop makes for great house prices & great driving distance to downtown, Reliant Park or NASA!?
  • From Philip Misner: ?Still ?undiscovered? country living in the city! Quiet, beautiful, clean community of family, churches & schools with all the city conveniences ? 24 hours a day, surrounding but not invading the neighborhood. Hope this doesn?t send us a rush of ?yuppies? (remember them?) but that?s what is really cool, everybody is welcome & lives here, very culturally diverse, and ALL wonderful friendly neighbors . . .?
  • From Jan Forrester: ?My dad and grandfather built our home in the original 5 street Meadowcreek Village neighborhood in 1955-56. I even remember the evening we ?officially? moved in. My parents moved out of our home last year, the last of the original families to leave. 2 months later I moved back in. It has taken a bit of getting used to living outside of the Loop after all these years but I don?t regret the decision at all. I really love being ?back home?!?
  • From Susan & Larry Fox: ?More than 30 years ago Meadow Creek Village was the only neighborhood we looked into, and we are still here! The big trees snuggle us into our homes. The Gold Crested Herons make their nests 40 feet above in the pines. These birds are our symbol, part of our identity.?
  • From Ken Reed: ?We?ve lived in Meadowcreek Village 53 years. It has held up well, and we expect to remain here the rest of our lives . . . in peace and happiness. If we won the lotto, we?d stay put.?
  • From robert: ?That place is one huge cancer zone, you could never pay me to live that close to all those refineries.?
  • From W.R.S.: ?On the bayou are many water fowl, all types of wildlife, we even have an eagle at times, the neighbors are tops, and it is a clean & a quiet neighborhood. I would not want to live any other place.?
  • From Diane Barber: ?The East Side is where it?s at, baby.?

Runner-up: The Greater Heights. Other nominees in this category: Alden Place, Old Sixth Ward Historic District, Montrose, Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, Piney Point Village, Springwoods Village, Braeswood Place, Knollwood Village and South Braeswood.

7. Greatest Moment in Houston Real Estate. Award winner: Voters Approve Funding for the Bayou Greenways Initiative, November 6th.

The nomination: ?The Bayou Greenways program will turn stormwater detention projects along the city?s bayous into parks, with continuous trails for running and cycling running along both sides. The new park space and improved drainage and infrastructure included in the plan could attract major new development to areas that have been neglected for decades, and help large sections of the city avoid flooding problems as well. The election victory gave voter approval for $100 million in bonds dedicated to bayou work, but an additional $105 million will need to be raised from private, state, and federal sources to complete the improvements.?

  • From Matt: ?Transforming the unsightly bayou into a true city treasure will have a lasting benefit for decades to come.?
  • From joel: ?The market will come and go with the oil money, but the parks and trails should outlast everything else on this list . . . or at least they should.?

Runner-up: Houston?s Real Estate Market Marks Its Comeback. Other nominees in this category: Construction Finally Begins on Regent Square?, KBR Sells Its Former Fifth Ward Campus, Grand Parkway Contractors Agree To Rebury Their Ancestors in Concrete, 806 Main St. Comes Out of Its Shell, Asia Society Texas Center Opens.
