It?s A Girl For Rebecca Gayheart & Eric Dane

Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Dane?s family just got bigger. The couple welcomed their second daughter last Wednesday. Looks like hunky Eric Dane better get used to a house full of women. His beautiful wife actress Rebecca Gayheart gave birth to the couple?s second child, Georgia Geraldine. Not a bad way to end 2011 if you ask me. A rep for the former Beverly Hills 90210 star has confirmed the new addition to the Gayheart/Dane family and has revealed that mom and the baby are doing just fine. Baby Georgia joins big sister Billie who will turn 2-years old in March. Rebecca?s rep also stated that Gayheart and Dane?s oldest daughter is thrilled to be a big sister. Yeah I wonder just how much Billie is going to like her new sibling when the baby requires all of her mom and dad?s attention, just sayin. The couple shared that they would adding to their family last July. Shortly after they announced the pregnancy Eric checked himself into rehab for his addiction to painkillers. The actor was there for 30 days. I personally think it is rather ironic that Dane who plays ladies man Dr. Mark Sloan or McSteamy on the ABC [...]

Just another partner search

Hello Loves. ^__^ Once again im looking to add a few new roleplay partners. I currently have a lot of extra time on my hands for reasons i would rather not go into, so.. i thought i would see if anyone is interested in a few one on ones? I tend to favor darker themed roleplays, though thats not all i'll do. I am also usually more prone to fantasy, but i've been known to do a realistic if the story is good. Post length tends to vary depending on whats going on, but i can usually get up to 4 decent paragraphs. I can play either gender. I favor the female role but am not limited to it. I can aslo double if need be. Pairing wise i have no limits. I have done the standard male/female, male/male and female/female a number of times each.

A few things i would be interested in
~Angel/demon
~boarding school -School in general is an interesting place to have a setting
~urban fantasy
~dark fantasy
~Romance (as part of the plot, not the whole thing)

US wants 2012 talks for Taliban political office (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration hopes to restore momentum in the spring to U.S. talks with the Taliban insurgency that had reached a critical point before falling apart this month because of objections from Afghan President Hamid Karzai, U.S. and Afghan officials said.

One goal of renewed talks with the insurgents would be to identify cease-fire zones that could be used as a steppingstone toward a full peace agreement that stops most fighting, a senior administration official told The Associated Press ? a goal that remains far out of reach.

U.S. officials from the State Department and White House plan to continue a series of secret meetings with Taliban representatives in Europe and the Persian Gulf region next year, assuming a small group of Taliban emissaries the U.S. considers legitimate remains willing, two officials said.

The U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the sensitive and precarious U.S. outreach to the Taliban leadership.

The U.S. outreach to the Taliban this year had fits and starts but had progressed to the point that there was active discussion of two steps the Taliban seeks as precursors to negotiations, the senior U.S. official said. Talks are on an unofficial hiatus at Karzai's request, U.S. and other officials said.

Those trust-building measures were a Taliban headquarters office and the release from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, of about five Afghan prisoners considered affiliated with the Taliban. Those steps were to be matched by assurances from at least part of the Taliban leadership that the insurgents would cut ties with al-Qaida, accept the elected civilian government of Afghanistan and bargain in good faith.

The Taliban office idea is seen the most likely to regain traction next year, but it's unclear when it might open. A political office in a neutral third country would be authorized to conduct talks on a peaceful end to the 10-year war.

Karzai remains opposed to the more difficult prisoner transfer plan, which is further complicated by new congressional restrictions on any prisoner transfers.

The U.S. tentatively had agreed to transfer a handful of Afghan prisoners to house arrest in a third country, probably Qatar, before the deal unraveled, U.S. officials said.

The Associated Press has learned the identity of some of the proposed transferees, including Khairullah Khairkhwa, former Taliban governor of Herat, and Mullah Mohammed Fazl, a former top Taliban military commander believed responsible for sectarian killings before the U.S. invasion that toppled the Taliban government in Afghanistan in 2001.

Karzai's own advisers seeking peace with the Taliban had named those men among several Afghan Taliban prisoners it wanted released from Guantanamo as a goodwill gesture, but Karzai wants the prisoners to come to Afghanistan, not a third country, a senior Afghan official in the region said.

Sending Afghans to an Arab country could offend Afghans' sense of sovereignty and suggest that the U.S. does not think Afghanistan is fit to hold or try the men, officials said.

"As soon as I was released, I met President Karzai and he promised that he would not allow Afghan prisoners to be sent anywhere except Afghanistan," said Haji Ruhollah, an Afghan who was released from Guantanamo in 2010. "They are all Afghans and they should be brought and kept in Afghanistan."

U.S. and Afghan officials also pointed to Karzai's longstanding unease with what he sees as a rush by the U.S. to broker deals ahead of the planned exit of U.S. combat forces by 2015. Karzai has political problems at home, including newly resurgent militias, and the assassination of his chief peace negotiator in September clouds his own outreach to the Taliban.

The U.S. once swore off direct talks with the Taliban until the insurgents essentially were beaten but shifted position as the war dragged on in near stalemate. Participants said they still consider a peace deal a long shot, and the insurgent leadership has shown no sign it wants to stop fighting a guerrilla war it thinks it can sustain until after most foreign forces depart.

The Associated Press is not identifying U.S. officials involved in the direct talks in consideration of their safety. One member of the Taliban negotiating team has been publicly identified as Tayyab Aga, an emissary of Pakistan-based Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar. Other participants include a former Taliban ambassador to Saudi Arabia and a former Taliban deputy health minister, the senior Afghan official said.

The U.S. goal is to midwife talks between the insurgents and the U.S.-backed Afghan government led by Karzai, who frequently has felt sidelined by the U.S. as it pursues talks with his enemies. He bills peace talks as an Afghan-led process, which the U.S. insists is also its goal. The U.S. outreach is meant to jump-start negotiations, U.S. officials have said, but they acknowledge that their efforts can feed the perception that Karzai is not fully in charge.

Although the Karzai government shares the goal of outreach and eventual political reconciliation with the Afghan Taliban movement, he resents the insurgents' demand only to speak with what they call American occupiers. He has argued that the U.S. undercuts his leverage, and his inner circle derailed initial U.S.-Taliban talks earlier this year, several officials previously told the AP.

Karzai has supported the general idea of an office, preferably in Afghanistan, but he balked when the plan for Qatar appeared to have been settled without him, officials said. Earlier this month, Kabul recalled its ambassador to Qatar for consultations over reports that the Taliban was planning to open an office there.

An Afghan official, who could not be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue, said at the time that the ambassador was recalled because Qatar had not consulted with them throughout the process. The Afghan government supports the establishment of an office for the Taliban only as a facilitative step in the peace process, not as any kind of a concession to them, the official said.

On Tuesday, Karzai backed down. He said his government would accept the Qatar office to hold peace talks, although Saudi Arabia or Turkey would be preferable venues.

If the United States insists that the insurgents establish a liaison office in Qatar, "we are agreed," Karzai said in a presidential statement.

Karzai's preference for Saudi Arabia or Turkey over Qatar is based on his belief that the Saudis can be trusted and their status as an established Muslim power broker, the senior Afghan official said. Turkey is a neighbor of Afghanistan and already involved in international efforts to stabilize the country.

Karzai and his inner circle think the tiny gas-rich Arab state of Qatar is not a strong Muslim country and is not particularly close to Afghanistan, the official said.

Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine publishes 2011 standards that guide consistent classification of spinal cord injuries in care and research

West Orange, NJ. December 28, 2011. The 2011 revision of the International Standards for the Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) was published in the November 2011 issue of the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine. The accompanying reference article by Steven Kirshblum et al clarifies the modifications to this newest revision. Both are available for free download via http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/maney/scm (#6, Nov 2011).

ISNCSCI are the recommended guidelines for the consistent classification of the neurological level and extent of injury to achieve reliable data for clinical care and research studies in spinal cord injury.

Classification is based on systematic sensory and motor examination of dermatomes and myotomes to determine the spinal cord segments that are injured. Following ISNCSCI guidelines yields the sensory and motor levels of injury (right and left), the neurological level of injury (NLI), sensory scores (pin prick & light touch), motor scores (upper and lower limbs) and the zone of partial preservation (ZPP). The ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS) classifies the severity, or completeness, of injury.

ISNCSCI is used to assess prognosis and measure recovery and results of rehabilitation interventions and experimental therapies. This 2011 revision was generated by the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) in collaboration with the International Spinal Cord Society. Because of the importance of global dissemination of ISNCSCI to professionals in spinal cord injury care and research, the 2011 revised ISNSCI and reference article are freely available via ingentaconnect.com.

First developed by ASIA in 1982, the widespread and consistent use of ISNCSCI's precisely defined classifications has facilitated clinical care as well as research in spinal cord medicine. ISNSCI is revised periodically to reflect advances in understanding of the neurological effects of spinal cord injury, and to ensure reliability and validity of the guidelines.

Toshiba Thrive 7" review

As 2011 draws to a close, it's fun to look back and think about how we began the year testing the first Honeycomb tablet, and are now ending it elbow-deep in me-too slates, many of them cut down to smaller sizes. So it should surprise no one, then, that Toshiba released the Thrive 7", a mini (and aptly named) version of the original Thrive, which went on sale last summer.

But in Toshiba's case, shrinking a tablet and calling it a day is a dicey proposition. After all, the 10-inch Thrive had some baggage -- namely, middling battery life, a chunky, toy-like design and a bug that initially kept it from waking after recharging. Indeed, the Thrive 7" looks near-identical, and even packs the same Tegra 2 chip, 16GB of storage and vanilla take on Honeycomb. Still, it brings an LED flash, keeps its big brother's 1280 x 800 display and costs less than the original did when it first came out. So are these improvements enough to make this smaller Thrive stand out? And how does it stack up against all those other 7-inch slates we've been testing lately? Let's find out.

NFL: Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow remains confident despite debacle against Buffalo Bills

He's revived a foundering Denver franchise with last-minute magic. Tim Tebow's next challenge is rebounding from the worst game of his NFL career.

Tebow threw four interceptions in a 40-14 loss at Buffalo on Christmas Eve, two of which were returned for touchdowns in a 19-second span.

If Tebow was shaken by the four-interception game, he isn't showing it, insisting "my confidence is just fine."

That faith will come in handy Sunday when Tebow tries to beat the guy he couldn't beat out in training camp -- Kyle Orton, who brings Kansas City (6-9) to Denver with a shot at spoiling the playoff hopes of a team that shunted him aside.

The Broncos (8-7) can clinch the AFC West and their first playoff berth since 2005 with a win. They could also lose Sunday and make the postseason if San Diego beats the Raiders.

Asked if he's confident he has the better quarterback for this matchup, Broncos coach John Fox replied: "Well, we made that decision, you know. As I always say about anything, looking forward, time will tell."

The Broncos might have to face Orton with a makeshift secondary. Safety Brian Dawkins left last week's game with a recurring neck injury. Starting safety Quinton Carter pulled a hamstring and nickel back Chris Harris hurt his neck, too.

Cowboys: All the negative tests on quarterback Tony Romo's bruised throwing hand are positives for Dallas. Coach Jason Garrett said the swelling is going

down and that a number of different tests confirm the original diagnosis of nothing being broken in Romo's right hand. All indications are Romo will be ready for Sunday's game at the New York Giants that will determine who wins the NFC East and goes to the playoffs. The Cowboys (8-7) will be without starting guard Montrae Holland, who was put on injured reserve with a partially torn left biceps.

Vikings: Minnesota expects running back Adrian Peterson to be recovered from left knee surgery for two torn ligaments in time to start the 2012 season. "Adrian has the DNA to heal quickly ... and the mental toughness to be able to get through the rehab process, which will take months and months," head trainer Eric Sugarman said. Peterson, who signed a seven-year, $100 million contract extension before the season, was hurt during a 33-26 win over Washington on Saturday.

Rams: Justin King (shoulder injury) became the fourth St. Louis cornerback to be sidelined with a season-ending injury. Previously, Ron Bartell, Brandon Fletcher and Al Harris were knocked out for the year. ... Coach Steve Spagnuolo said quarterback Sam Bradford is day to day with a high ankle sprain. The Rams host the 49ers on Sunday.

Bengals: Cincinnati offered refreshments to fans who lined up for a ticket promotion aimed at filling Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday. The Bengals made a buy-one, get-one-free offer to season ticket holders. Cincinnati (9-6) would clinch a wild-card playoff berth by beating Baltimore (11-4). The Bengals have sold out just one home game, when Pittsburgh brought thousands of fans to the stadium.

Trees In Trouble: Grim Future For Frankincense

Frankincense comes from the Boswellia sacra tree, which grows mainly in the Horn of Africa. The number of trees that produce the fragrant resin could decline by 90 percent in the next 50 years. scott.zona/flickr

Frankincense comes from the Boswellia sacra tree, which grows mainly in the Horn of Africa. The number of trees that produce the fragrant resin could decline by 90 percent in the next 50 years.

The original Christmas presents were gold, frankincense and myrrh. That's what wise men brought to the baby Jesus, according to the Gospel of Matthew. Frankincense is still used today ? for perfumes, incense and traditional medicines ? but a new study suggests that its future looks grim.

The trees that produce this fragrant resin are in serious trouble, says Frans Bongers, a forestry expert at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He says production of frankincense could be cut in half in just 15 years. And in the next 50 years, tree numbers could decline by 90 percent, according to his new study published in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

Frankincense comes from various species of Boswellia, a tree that mainly grows in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. People make cuts in the bark and let the tree sap ooze out. After it hardens into yellowish lumps, they come back to collect it, and then make more cuts. "And so they come back every two weeks for the whole dry season, and that's about nine months," Bongers explains.

He and colleagues monitored forests in Ethiopia with thousands of frankincense trees for about two years, comparing plots where trees were tapped with plots where trees were left alone.

They found that the forests were declining, regardless of whether they were tapped for frankincense or not. In general, they found big, old trees that were dying at an alarming rate, possibly because of insect attack.

Meanwhile, they found a dearth of younger trees. Bongers said they mainly saw just tiny seedlings in the grass. "They do not grow into a sapling, and they do not grow into a new tree," says Bongers.

He says that's because they burn up in fires set by farmers or are eaten by grazing cattle.

The only hope of preserving frankincense is to set aside large areas, to let young trees get established, says Bongers. But that's a hard case to make when local people are struggling to make a living.

"People say, 'Well, yes, we do understand, but at the same time we have to survive,' " he says. "So I'm realistic on this, I think."

Already, in some countries, like Yemen and Oman, says Bongers, the frankincense is almost gone.

Christmas comet Lovejoy captured at Paranal Observatory in Chile

ScienceDaily (Dec. 24, 2011) ? The recently discovered Comet Lovejoy has been captured in stunning photos and time-lapse video taken from the European Southern Observatory's Paranal Observatory in Chile. The comet graced the southern sky after it had unexpectedly survived a close encounter with the Sun.

A new time-lapse video sequence was taken by Gabriel Brammer from ESO less than two days ago on Dec. 22, 2011. Gabriel was finishing his shift as support astronomer at the Paranal Observatory when Comet Lovejoy rose over the horizon just before dawn.

In the words of Gabriel Brammer himself: "On the last morning of my shift I tried to try catch it on camera before sunrise. The tail of the comet was easily visible with the naked eye, and the combination of the crescent Moon, comet, Milky Way and the laser guide star was nearly as impressive to the naked eye as it appears in the long-exposure photos."

The sequence also features the pencil-thin beam of the VLT's Laser Guide Star set against the beautiful backdrop of the Milky Way, as astronomers conduct their last observations for the night.

ESO optician Guillaume Blanchard made a marvellous wide-angle photo of Comet Lovejoy and ESO Photo Ambassador Yuri Beletsky, captured the spectacle from Santiago de Chile. Blanchard said: "For me this comet is a Christmas present to the people who will stay at Paranal over Christmas."

This bright comet was also seen from the International Space Station in another stunning time-lapse sequence on Dec. 21 as the crew filmed lightning on Earth's night side (see: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/videogallery/index.html?media_id=125774121).

Comet Lovejoy has been the talk of the astronomy community over the past few weeks. It was discovered Nov. 27 by the Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy and was classified as a Kreutz sungrazer, with its orbit taking it very close to the Sun. (Kreutz sungrazers are members of a family of comets thought to come from the break up of one single large comet in the 12th century, and which now orbit the Sun along the same path.) Just last week, the comet entered the Sun's corona, a much-anticipated event, passing a mere 140,000 kilometres from the Sun's surface. A close shave indeed...

The comet was expected to break up and vaporise, but instead it survived its steaming hot encounter with the Sun and re-emerged a few days later, much to everyone's surprise. It is now visible from the southern hemisphere, appearing at dawn, and features a bright tail millions of kilometres long, composed of dust particles that are being blown ahead of the comet by the solar wind.

Lovejoy will now continue in its highly eccentric orbit around the Sun and once again disappear into the distant Solar System. It would be interesting to know if it will actually survive to re-appear in our skies in 314 years as predicted.

First lady asked Santa to help get Obama to Hawaii (AP)

HONOLULU ? Michelle Obama was looking for help from more than just House Republicans so her husband could make it to Hawaii in time for Christmas.

"We were all praying and praying, and asking Santa, and the tooth fairy, and every fairy they could think of," the first lady said Saturday. She said their children prayed as well that the president "would be able to be with us."

President Barack Obama eventually made it to Hawaii, about a week late, and only after Congress resolved its stalemate over extending expiring payroll tax cuts.

With the tense tax standoff behind him, the president has eased into vacation mode since arriving on the island of Oahu Friday night, spending a low-key Christmas Eve out of the spotlight.

Obama skipped his normal early morning gym workout Saturday, opting to spend time at the multimillion-dollar vacation home his family rents in the Kailua Beach area, near Honolulu. He headed to the golf course later in the day.

The first lady, meanwhile, got into the Christmas spirit by helping track Santa for NORAD. The North American Aerospace Defense Command has been telling anxious children about Santa's whereabouts every year since 1955.

The White House said Mrs. Obama answered several calls from children around the country who wanted to know how close Santa was to their homes. During one conversation, she divulged how she and her daughters sought Santa's help in bringing the president to Hawaii.

The Obamas were to spend Christmas Eve at home with a close circle of family and friends that typically joins the president for his annual Hawaiian vacation. They include Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives in the state with her family, and several friends the president has known since high school.

Earlier in the week, it looked as though the president's annual December trip to the state where he was born and mostly raised might not happen.

The president pledged to stay in Washington until a deal on extending the payroll tax cuts was reached. When his planned Dec. 17 departure date arrived without a deal, the White House wouldn't say if or when Obama might leave.

A deal was finalized Friday morning. Hours later, the president boarded Air Force One for Hawaii to meet his wife and daughters, who traveled ahead of him.

Obama's first order of business when he arrived was taking his wife out to dinner. The couple joined a few friends at Morimoto restaurant, one of their favorite dining spots on the island of Oahu.

The president has no public events planned in Hawaii. A small group of advisers accompanied him to brief him on domestic and international developments.

The Obamas are expected to return to Washington shortly after New Year's Day.

Shocker! Tablet ad requests up 700 percent during 2011

Good news: all those new tablets you see reported on these pages aren't being stolen by elves; they're entering the human population at large and -- most Christmassy of all -- they're displaying ads. Google told TechCrunch that its AdMob platform saw eight billion ad requests from tablets during the month of November, compared to one lonely billion back in December 2010. Total AdMob requests amount to roughly three billion per day, however, so tablet advertising is still sugary froth compared to that on smartphones.

AIG's Benmosche wants to extend his stay: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? American International Group Inc (AIG.N) CEO Robert Benmosche has told the company's directors that he would like to remain in his job longer than previously planned, the Wall Street Journal reported on its website.

Benmosche said in an interview with the Journal that he plans to run New York-based AIG beyond next year, his health permitting. He had previously indicated that he planned to return to retirement sometime in 2012.

"I've talked to the board and said that if I stay healthy -and I'm still hopeful - I would like to stay on for another year," he told the Journal. "I want to stay active and energized, and having too much time on my hands is not healthy, I think."

AIG's board doesn't have to approve Benmosche's decision to stay, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter. The CEO had previously threatened to quit two years ago after a run-in with government officials, the Journal said.

The 67-year-old, whom many people credit with rescuing American International Group from a breakup after taking over as CEO in 2009, was diagnosed with cancer in late 2010.

AIG spokesman Mark Herr confirmed that Benmosche said he would like to continue as CEO beyond 2012, health permitting.

Video: Self-healing electronics could work longer and reduce waste

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

When one tiny circuit within an integrated chip cracks or fails, the whole chip ? or even the whole device ? is a loss. But what if it could fix itself, and fix itself so fast that the user never knew there was a problem?

A team of University of Illinois engineers has developed a self-healing system that restores electrical conductivity to a cracked circuit in less time than it takes to blink. Led by aerospace engineering professor Scott White and materials science and engineering professor Nancy Sottos, the researchers published their results in the journal Advanced Materials.

"It simplifies the system," said chemistry professor Jeffrey Moore, a co-author of the paper. "Rather than having to build in redundancies or to build in a sensory diagnostics system, this material is designed to take care of the problem itself."

As electronic devices are evolving to perform more sophisticated tasks, manufacturers are packing as much density onto a chip as possible. However, such density compounds reliability problems, such as failure stemming from fluctuating temperature cycles as the device operates or fatigue. A failure at any point in the circuit can shut down the whole device.

"In general there's not much avenue for manual repair," Sottos said. "Sometimes you just can't get to the inside. In a multilayer integrated circuit, there's no opening it up. Normally you just replace the whole chip. It's true for a battery too. You can't pull a battery apart and try to find the source of the failure."

Professor Scott White and his team of scientists have developed a new way for electronics and batteries to repair themselves. Credit: Katherine Gatsche, University of Illinois

Most consumer devices are meant to be replaced with some frequency, adding to electronic waste issues, but in many important applications ? such as instruments or vehicles for space or military functions ? electrical failures cannot be replaced or repaired.

The Illinois team previously developed a system for self-healing polymer materials and decided to adapt their technique for conductive systems. They dispersed tiny microcapsules, as small as 10 microns in diameter, on top of a gold line functioning as a circuit. As a crack propagates, the microcapsules break open and release the liquid metal contained inside. The liquid metal fills in the gap in the circuit, restoring electrical flow.

"What's really cool about this paper is it's the first example of taking the microcapsule-based healing approach and applying it to a new function," White said. "Everything prior to this has been on structural repair. This is on conductivity restoration. It shows the concept translates to other things as well."

A failure interrupts current for mere microseconds as the liquid metal immediately fills the crack. The researchers demonstrated that 90 percent of their samples healed to 99 percent of original conductivity, even with a small amount of microcapsules.

The self-healing system also has the advantages of being localized and autonomous. Only the microcapsules that a crack intercepts are opened, so repair only takes place at the point of damage. Furthermore, it requires no human intervention or diagnostics, a boon for applications where accessing a break for repair is impossible, such as a battery, or finding the source of a failure is difficult, such as an air- or spacecraft.

"In an aircraft, especially a defense-based aircraft, there are miles and miles of conductive wire," Sottos said. "You don't often know where the break occurs. The autonomous part is nice ? it knows where it broke, even if we don't."

Next, the researchers plan to further refine their system and explore other possibilities for using microcapsules to control conductivity. They are particularly interested in applying the microcapsule-based self-healing system to batteries, improving their safety and longevity.
